Default MP3 Surround - w/PS3

Hey guys,

A few months ago the PS3 had a firmware update that provided support for MP3 Surround. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3_Surround

First time I had heard of it - but it needed HDMI support to the receiver, which I didn't have at the time.

I now have Onkyo 706 on the way and was wondering if anyone has any info on this sound format:
  • Does it sound good/better?
  • Where do you go to get these files?
  • Is there a program to change your current stereo MP3's to surround?

I really like 5.1 music - so I'd be really interested in this format.

Thanks to anyone who can provide some info or has some experience with this.

I'd be interested to hear what they sound like. This is the first that I have heard of them as well. I have a bunch of 5.1 WAV files. I would hate to convert them to MP3 but may try one to see the difference.

I recently hooked my old D-Link DSM-320 back up in order to enjoy them. And show off the surround since they are AWESOME for that.

Have you tried the various external links from the wiki entry? I did and found a eval version of a converter. I may try doing a conversion of one of my 5.1 WAV files to see if I hear any difference.

I just wish the PS3 would support the 5.1 WAV files. There are plenty more of them around the 'net.

Where did you get your 5.1 WAV files in the first place?

I am going to have to try one of these files out....

I know my 805 try's to recreate surround... It will put the Vocals in the front and only play music in the rear speakers on certain settings.
