Default panasonic 85u vs 800u ? any thoughts?

hi, my brother inlaw is going to purchase a 50" panasonic plasma this week. he is deciding between the 85u model and the 800u model. the difference is on the 24p playback i think. the 800u has 24p cinematic playback and the 85u has 24p playback (2:3), what is the difference and is it worth the $400 orice difference? any help would be great so i can relay it back to him. need some expert panny plasma guys to give me some input.

thanks

the 800u also has THX color, which makes for a more accurate color decoding...which may or may not be worth the extra money.

...I would go for the better color decoding if possible.

+1. both are excellent choices though. cant lose either way but push your budget as much as possible, remember you will have it for a while.

The 800 also has a better native contrast rating.

I couldn't decide either but then went for the 800u after asking in this thread. It does give you better and a more cinematic feeling after all.

800u has more lines of color gradiation....5020 compared to 4096 of the 85u...what does that mean, basically that the contrast will be better on the 800u and the gradiation between colors will be better.

Other than that though the two sets are pretty similar. the only other main difference is that the 800u will handle 24fps nativley while the 85u and 80u series will do 24fps via 3:2 pulldown

however both are excellent sets. if you can spare the extra cash go with the 800u, if not the 85u is a top notch tv that you will be incredibly happy with

8 bit media will not yield more than 256 levels of gray per color.

12 bit yields 4096....more than plenty for Bluray.

this chart also states that the 58-850 and 65-850 come with swivel base. Actually, the 58 doesn't swivel and the 65's base is sold separately.

I believe during Black Friday, the 80U was $799 in stores. It also depends on the size. The 80U is the entry level Panasonic Plasma to best categorize it.

Did any one did an AB comparison of picture quality of 85U with 800U? How much different are they? I mean is the PQ difference noticable?

Thanks
