Default Linking to other sites:

Somebody in one of the threads is upset about links to a third party web-site.

Is linking to third party websites really prohibited by owners of this forum?

Thanks

I do not think there is an official policy or anything but it does tend to be considered "bad behavior" at most sites. I do not think they care about links to something like google or something but competing audio/video sites might be a problem.

In this case it is a link to a review and this site has it's own reviewers who volunteer their time to do it so taking traffic away from their hard work is disrespectful.

Internet would be a very boring place if links to other sites were prohibited everywhere. Prohibiting links to other sites is rather an exception, than "bad behavior."

But, this is a private site, and the owners are free to make the rules whatever they wish.

I get that, but is it because of the particular site that linked to? Because every single movie discussion thread in here is linked to reviews as they crop up on the net when release dates approach.

It's not any specific site that's prohibited, no, and we're talking about dozens of movies released each week worldwide. To be on top of every linked post is difficult, fortunately the members flag them. Any site on any topic that I have ever been an active member or mod on has frowned upon linking to competing sites, it is a very common practice. It's just like a store allowing someone else to advertise their competing stuff taking business away.

ok so if we have 100 members here who do their own reviews and for every movies they started a thread and linked reviews, then say just random members started a thread because site xx had xxx review before here. SO for every movie we would have 100-115 review threads per movie and if there were 5-10 movies released that week imagine the mayhem

Its just not something we need, One thread for the movie

Its been deleted by a higher up, so that answers that question

There is no need to frown. You can just make a rule, and you can even make it automatic in the software so the links do not post.

Thanks for the answer. Have a good one.
