Default Just bought my dad some speakers for Xmas!

http://www.amazon.com/Fluance-Surrou...8861970&sr=8-2

Yay! These should sound very nice for him!!!

He is using a 90's Toshiba or Kenwood (Can't remember) receiver. Its pretty nice, but I'm going to warn him that he might have to get a new one that is at-least 50watts and supports 5.1 if it doesn't indeed support it.

Most importantly, his 2 speakers are some old ass Montgomery Ward speakers from the 70s. The left one rattles.........

I know virtually nothing about sound. Has anyone had any experience with this brand? I've only been hearing good things about them.

This is his Receiver:
http://www.abt.com/product/15452.html

Looks like he's going to need a new one, right? That doesn't even have 5.1. The wattage seems sufficient though.

Ughh..doesn't even have digital Audio. Why does he buy such crap........

No stats on these speakers whatsoever on Amazon's page. $200 for what's pictured seems like it could be a heck of a deal I guess.

Cnet seemed to like them:

Fluance is a great entry-level line. I know Daddyo frequently suggests them for the low-budget sound enthusiast. Those, and an eD sub, is an incredible combo rivaling anything that a store could sell you for two to three times the cost.

Ye, that's what I heard. One reviewer said that he wasn't told the price of that speaker system, and he was guessing $500-600.

He was amazed at only a $199 price tag. And like you said, I've read that they blow away any "Speakers in a box" setup. Plus, it's being a nice thing they come from Canada, and not just Chinese factory overseas.

Anyhow, I think it's obvious he is going to need a receiver that can support them (5.1). Hopefully this should get him on the road to a decent sound system.

Nash

Fluance is a Canadian factory direct company. Their speakers are very reasonably priced. CNET gives them good reviews. You can't do better for the price.

As you may know there are a lot of great Canadian speaker companies such as Paradigm, PSB, Mirage, Energy, Axiom, Totem, etc. The reason is mainly because Canada established a research center in Ottawa called the National Research Council of Canada. They did pioneering research in audio, speakers, and subwoofers. All Canadian companies have benefitted from this. Many American and European companies have also gone there to use their state of the art audio facilities.

Can anyone recommend me a good receiver to put with this system. Something on the cheap side preferably, with the information on the wires, etc.

most people here will recommend an Onkyo 605/606. With a PS3 you need something that accepts audio via HDMI.

you can get it for around $300 from amazon/ecost/onkyo direct. you can even save if you dont mind a refurb.

I noticed that the 5-series are over $100 cheaper. Is there a reason?

What do you mean by 5 series? Do you mean like 605, 705, 805 or 505, 550, 575?

First numbers being 5. He only needs a 5.1 system, and not a 7.1 system. I'm not sure if you pay more for that technology or not.

Also, 100 watts per channel is all is needed for these speakers. So on a cost-effective note, what would be optimal.

The 5** series receivers can't accept PCM over HDMI, which disallows you to have HD codecs. For about the same price as the 5** series, you can find the 606 at Ecost for around $250.

Absolutely. Only if it was in stock though

What do you think about this baby:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDG820-...9052347&sr=8-5

This one is cheaper:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDG720-...4D7RVRPVN5R2F9

Probably still doesn't support the PCM thing
