Default A sign of the times?

So anyway, I was browsing through the futureshop flyer online today and came across a nice change in advertising which I thought I'd share.

Usually new releases have the featured item being the DVD and include an "Also available on Blu-ray" blurb, however, this week it was reversed. The Blu-ray versions of The Mummy 3, The Mummy Trilogy, and Mamma Mia are featured and have an "Also available on DVD" blurb underneath.

Not sure what advertising is like in the States, but personally, I really hope this advertising continues at futureshop and pops up in other places as well.

Picture available here although Mamma Mia is actually advertised on the next page

I think this is all part of the current marketing effort of major Hollywood movie studios to hype Blu-ray. I've seen a lot of TV commercials for Blu-ray and specific movie advertisements only mentioning the Blu-ray version and its unique features. Lots of new movies arriving on video feature the BD stacked in front of the DVD. Not all, but most.

Most TV commercials here in the states say "On Blu-Ray high def and DVD" when advertising a new release.

I saw a commercial for Mamma Mia on Blu-ray. There was no mention or even a picture for the DVD. It also said for a limited time only. What does that mean? It's gonna be on just Blu-ray for a limited time and then later release the DVD?

Yeah...I see those every now and then. I still see a bunch of commercials that fail to mention the Blu-ray counterpart at all, though.

Same here.

And even if they don't say that, the Blu-ray is usually in front of the DVD at the end of the commercial.

I saw an ad for The Kingdom on HD-DVD the other day... I laughed really hard, and then regretted not having a PVR lol... but I've noticed at my work our Blu sales increasing (so much so actually that The Dark Knight, we got only 20 fewer copies on blu than on DVD)

Now that Blu-ray has hit the market and with all it's success on Black Friday I feel when people go in to get their new DVD they will see the Blu-ray next to it or above it and see that for the additional price it's the Bigger Better Deal and succumb to the greatness that is Blu-ray. I have spoken and so it shall be done LOL .
