Default Very Annoyed

Is it just me or are other people annoyed at this new format? I spent quite some time building up a respectable DVD collection, only to find it will be obselete in a couple of years. I don't want to have to update my film collection every 5 or 6 years, just because there is a new format. All in all im very anti blu ray.

Default No one is too blame

This was not intentional. When DVD was being developed, HD Digital TV was still only a glimmer in the sky.

DVD was made to support the resolution of the medium of the day. That medium being standard TV resolution. 480i crapola. The likelyhood of having to update all your movies AGAIN are low as no tv supporting above 1080 exists - yet.

Nor do you have to upgrade. Blu-ray players will be backwards compatible with DVD. That is the reason why we need blu-ray to be the standard. To prevent another format war and support possible higher resolution tv. We may not see broadcast tv at 2160 resolution, but apparently there is little reason why blu-ray could not eventually support it.

But Blu-Ray machines will still play dvds. Also the format won't be released until 2006/7. Then it won't be until 2010 ish before players have come down from the initial £1500 (to a more affordable level) and there's a decent range of titles available. So I wouldn't worry prematurely. No one says you have to replace your current/future dvd purchases with their Blu-Ray equivelent. Keep your dvds for as long as you won't, then just buy new titles for Blu-Ray. Remember your gonna need a new hi-def tv to play Blu-Ray anyway. 1920 by 1080p being the optimum res.

Thanks a lot i feel about 10x better now. I guess i didn't have all the facts and just jumped to conclusions! I was just worried i'd suddenly have to rebuy The Godfather Trilogy, Casablanca and all my Akira Kurosawa films(not cheap for a 15 year old still at school)

Actually the industry was well aware of HDTV's prospects and created DVD as an temporary format. Blu-ray's lifespan will be much much longer than DVD. Still it's true that even HD's 1080i has already been outdated by the Japanese who've already created SuperHD, that's got 16X more resolution than HDTV!

That question makes no sense. :?:

Widescreen DVD or blu-ray plays in widescreen on a widescreen tv. Period. The resolution depends on which format is playing.

The next format is more likely to be 2160. I believe it's currently in use for public broadcasts.

The other format you talk of is most likely for public brodcast also. 20-30 years away for the consumer at a guess.

I didn't mean that that new Japanese 16X HD format would be the next consumer format. My point was just to say that even HDTV is far outdated already by technology standards.

WOW, 15 years old and you actually like such films?? Congrats son, at your age, most kids enjoy the action flicks (not that there's anything wrong with that) but tend to get bored on B&W films or anything before the 1980's outside of star wars, jaws and the like. Just thought I mentioned this since it is rare to find those titles coming out of a teen's mouth.
