Boasting about how unhackable your "whatever" is, seems like a sure fire way to get someone to hack it.

Sony should give dark alex a method to hack the PS3, at least then it has a chance to compete with the hacked wii/360 sales.

there are positives and negatives to hacking a console. that being said..i'm not sure that article really grasps the reasons why it hasn't been hacked

I don't believe in a computer system(which is what the software in a PS3 is) is hacker-proof. If they are smart enough, they will find a way through all of that. But it is good that Sony is going a capital job at trying though.

the funny thing is they are right about the SPE "vault" but its not the 7th SPE...it's the

8th SPE..

I do find it funny

once again a common misconception about the PS3

but.but.. i thought that 8 th SPE it was disabled for redundancy...

O'l it is

"meshed era redundancy"

Probably because no one wants to suddenly not be able to use their PSN account.

Also they could probably ban the MAC address of your PS3.

that SPE" VAULT" is a beast.

The Secure Processing Vault

Goal: isolation of an application

To achieve a secure platform, a processing environment must exist where a single application can execute isolated from all other executing software threads in the system. Â The Cell BE processor's Vault can provide such an environment. Â Within the vault, the execution of the application and its data cannot be manipulated or observed -- the hardware design prevents other applications from doing so. Â For example, digital movie content can be decrypted in, and played from, the vault without the danger of the content being compromised.

I really truly hope the PS3 never gets hacked. EVER. That's the worse thing that can happen to a console. It was probably the biggest single outside contributor to the demise of Sega's Dreamcast, which I love dearly.

Given the huge development costs for games this generation, hacked games will lead to noticable revenue losses with 3rd party publishers. This is already impacting the 360, and it leaves publishers weary of continuing development for a hacked console. We as gamers will suffer as a result. Sure, triple A titles such as GTA and COD games will continue thriving, but publishers will be more gun shy with unknown titles and lesser properties.

If the PS3 can remain unhackable, then it will be viewed as more of a safe haven for publishers. You might laugh at that, but once hacked piracy quickly ran wild on Dreamcast. Many developers quickly cut ties after that, and Sega announced the consoles demise just 2 years after it's release.

Unfortunately you are mistaken.

The 8th Cell SPE is disabled to increase wafer yields. It is unusable for any purpose and this is done on-die so not even Linux can unlock it even if it isn't a dud.

It is called harvesting. IBM make loads of Cell chips per wafer, but only 30% of them have a full set of 8 SPEs and 1 PPE. So instead of discarding the rest of the 70% they sell all of the chips they produce with 1 not working SPE to Sony which works out to about 85% of the remaining 70%. The rest go to Toshiba for SpursEngine who disable the PPE and two more SPEs, so the final yield for Cell is actually about 98% usable dice per wafer.

So while Sony wait for Toshiba/TSMC to move their fabs to 45nm they are building up a bunch of 45nm Cell chips from IBM as stock, unfortunately until Sony can secure a regular supply of 45nm chips with 7 active SPEs they won't put them into the unit.

Edit: for completeness' sake I will run down what each SPE does. 1-6 are available for developers, 7 is permanently reserved by the OS for security reasons and firmware (in-game OS functions), and 8 is disabled. 27MB XDR is reserved at all times by the OS and a few KB GDDR3 is reserved for rendering in-game OS functions.

yes ,there is but i think IBM has made the hack attempt pretty much a daunting task, liable to make some hacker's cry, while drinking their REDBULL cursing over and over again, while eating poptarts.

..several hours pass...

time to get more Redbull an poptarts

several weeks latter..this is just not worth it anymore
time to hack something else.

it was a little different with the dreamcast. all you had to do was burn the game..and it'd run lol
