Default How do I get HD sound with Z680 speakers?

Hi. First post here.

I would like to get HD sound from logitech my Z680 speakers but I am alittle confused.

Right now my PS3 is connected to the speakers using an optical cable and my tv is connected to the PS3 via an HDMI cable. Now, for me to get HD sound, the HDMI cable would have to be connected to the speakers? Right? How would I do this?

Thanks for any help.

If the speakers' receiver have an HDMI input, you can get HD sound.

Right now though, you cannot get HD sound in more than stereo 2.0 - in which case, lossy DD and DTS sound better. Optical can pass full 5.1 lossy codecs, but only 2 channels of HD sound.

No HDMI input on my speaker receiver. Would I just buy a new one that has HDMI? If so, is there one similar to this one I could buy?

I think you would need a new receiver, yes. For the entry level price point, you would need either a Sony STR-DG720 or DG820; or an Onkyo 606 - those are around $300.

But also, I am unsure if your speakers would be compatible with these. I mean, most speakers are, but I am unsure of the Logitech connections. Are they custom?

I think all the crossovers and amplification comes from the sub- it's like an all-in-one. All the inputs and outputs come from it.

OP, I'm not really sure that you're ever going to get satisfactory lossless audio with this setup. The Z series are primarily a computer or gaming console setup, and do that pretty well in a small environment. Trying to get them to pull double-duty to lossless audio is going to leave you unsatisfied. They simply don't have the range or the connections to do it properly.

...probably not the answer you wanted to hear. However, taking JJ's receiver suggestions and adding a simple 5.1 speaker setup like the Polk RM6750 or going to something like an Onkyo HTiB may be more what you're looking for without the big price.
