for the record....those dvd's in my collection are actual dvd's not pirated. i don't want someone to get the wrong idea. what i am looking to do is be able to put my dvd's into a smaller collection or at least back them up on a blu-ray disc. i had seen how one person put a couple of seasons of one show and a couple of another all on one disk. it is in this LEGAL area i am tryin to get some help. *after all, those dvd's take up alot of space physically

Ok, you will need 2541 gigs of storage to store all these movies (assume that 1 disc has 3 GB of content). That's about 51 Dual Layer Blu-ray Discs, which are 30 bucks a pop. So your going to be spending about 1530$ for the blank media, and some decent burning software would be about 100$.

EDIT: I forgot to mention a drive so that brings the total up to 2130$ . I wouldn't do it, 2100$ is way too much to save space, but if you have the time and money it sounds like a great idea.

When you're looking at buying a blu-ray title which you already have on DVD, check out sites like highdefdigest.com, and look at their reviews. They give a decent review of the video and audio quality of the movies, so you can see if the upgrade is worth it. Also, search these forums (use the search function) to find threads about movies you're interested in, to get first hand accounts of the video and audio quality. Some movies just aren't worth the upgrade.

I am confused by your question and the two replies. Are you trying to consolidate your DVD collection onto BD-R, or are you looking to start a new collection and replace your existing movies with new BD?

If you want to replace, then you don't need to buy anything but the new BD's. If your looking to consolidate then obviously you would need a BD drive for a PC, as I don't believe there are any stand-alone recorders yet. However, consolidation would be VERY time consuming for the amount of dics you would want to move over!

after looking at the first two posts i see how it may have been confusing as to what i was looking to do. sorry about that. i clearly see that this is going to be way more time consuming than i had thought. see, i used to use dvd shrink to burn dvds that i had in my collection. for example, i used my seinfeld collection to make a custom "best-of" or "my own favorite episode dvd" kinda thing. i didn't know if i start buying blu-ray discs if there are programs out there that will allow me to do the same kind of thing. and for the record, i am looking to start a new library of blu-ray discs. thanks alot so far for the input and help. all the advice you might have would greatly be appreciated...

If your looking to just start a new collection, then all you need is the money and drive to get off the couch, (or actually you can just sit on the couch and order online ) and buy some movies! Your PS3 is ready out of the box to play blu-ray. Alot of different opinions on here as to which should be your first BD purchase. Most of the animated movies are amazing, as well as casino royale. Everyone has their own tastes!
I'm assuming you have an HD TV?! If not, that will be a definate must-have! Enjoy!

Slowly replace every dvd with blu ray dvds, and thats it. There really isnt much to getting a blu ray collection other than the fact that you actually have to go buy it o.O.

Other advice is to go buy a HDTV that sports 1080p NOT 1080i. Theres a big difference between p and i. Hook up PS3 to HDTV via HDMI, or hook it up to HDMI supporting decoder (if you have one, otherwise hook ps3 via optical digital to decoder) After that, take your PS3 Blu Ray remote control(if you have one, otherwise, buy one), and watch movies in beautiful HD.
