Hey Guys,
I hooked up my Sony bdp-s350 player to my Infocus X2 projector and put in the Dark Knight. I noticed when watching the movie that the aspect ratio is incorrect. I do know that the aspect ratio changes due to the shift between film and Imax, but the Imax shots appear as fullscreen images, and the film scenes appear in a 1:85:1 aspect ratio instead of the 2:35:1 ratio that it should normally be in. I tried changing the settings but that did not seem to help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Thanks |

There is no aspect ratio problem with The Dark Knight (TDK). Christopher Nolan shot certine sequences in TDK in IMAX 1:43:1 I do belive. The Blu Ray IMAX sequences try to approximate the IMAX at 1:78:1. So there is no problem.
Look on the back of the Blu Ray where it gives the video specs and you will see that the Theatrical aspect ratio is 2:40:1 and IMAX are 1:78:1. |

O.P., do your other 2.40:1 movies look correct? 1.78 (the Imax portion) and 1.85 should look virtually identical. If you're getting black bars at the top/bottom then you're probably seeing 2.40:1. Unless of course you're settings are set for pan/scan. Here's a trick. An American dollar has an approximate dimension of 2.35:1 Hold it up against the picture and if they're similar than you're seeing it in the correct ratio. It's a trick we use at theatres to see if they're cropping the Cinemascope image very much. I'm not familiar with the X2. Perhaps your BD player is not set to output 16:9 but pan/scan instead? Hope someone can help you out. Good Luck! |

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. My other movies which are also 2:40:1 or 2:35:1 are being displayed in a 1:85:1 aspect ratio. My output is set to 16x9, not 4:3 pan and scan. The only other possibility, might be the fact that the projector has a native aspect ratio of 4x3. Thanks again for your help.
-Thanks |

The Infoucs X2 is an SVGA Projector (800 x 600 resolution, 4x3 Aspect ratio). You need to tell your BD Player its connected to a 4x3 player.
I am in a similar situation (I have an XGA projector, 1024x768 4x3) but when it detects a 720p or 1080i signal, it automatically squeezes it to 16x9, so I leave my player set to 1080i 16x9, and I get a nice image of approximately 540p from my projector. One day I'll get a real HD proejctor or maybe a TV, but for now it works so well for me that I can't justify the expense yet. |
