Default Too Many Movies?

Does anyone think there are too many movies being released in theatres now a days? I love movies. I own and see many many movies but I cant keep up. There are about 12 movies out or coming out Christmas Day that I want to see. During the summer there are 2-3 movies coming out every week. Too Much.
Maybe my age has something to do with it. Being 28 I am still interested in much of the animated flicks (Pixar, Shrek, etc) and I love big budget special effects types, comedies, and I even try to see the occasional oscar pic too. When I was younger it seemed that one movie a week was coming out worth seeing and even less during slow times. Opinions anyone?

I think there are many more movies, and better made movies (specially in the action/sci fi/comic book genres). Sometimes the studios release way to many at the same times, because they all want the most desirable openning dates.

This is an interesting question. Are there too many movies coming out? No. Are there too many crap movies coming out? Yes. The gems rarely come out. Decent ones come out every so often, but there's a lot of crap that comes out in the theater lately.

There are definitely a lot of movies, but I think it's because too many studios hold off and release them during certain seasons so we almost get a crapload of movies shit all over us during the holidays that we don't know what to do.

EDIT: Just discovered that Blu Titan said the same thing

The problem is there aren't too many good movies coming out.

Everyone has different tastes. So I don't think you can really have too many.

No in that it's great to have a lot of movies to see.

Yes in that the market isn't big enough for all the movies that come out thus too many good movies fail.

That is what I mean. There just isnt the time. 52 weeks and most people dont have the time to see more then 1 a week. There was about a 100 movies I would see if I could. Not enough time and I end up missing out.

i think there's too many crappy movies coming out, but not too many movies in general. i'm also getting pretty tired of super-hero/comic book movies.

take heart - you don't need to see 85% of what comes out, even at art theaters (unless they're retro houses - then everyday is hog heaven - bless you, varsity on the ave).

there are fewer theatrical releases now than there were decades ago (before home video, and then before tv). i think in 50 years output (american output) has dropped from 320-350 per year to 180 or so. i saw those numbers years ago and they may be rusty.

now if you fold in made for cable/network/video (and, well, porn) and the output is exponentially higher today.

i have to agree. comic book movies are becoming too much. for every one good or great comic book movie out there are 5-7 god awful ones out there. it really is starting to get old. quality over quantity.

Do you think the drop in 2008 was due to the writers strike mostly(from 2007-08)?

The strike forced a lot of productions into overdrive so that they could finish principle photography and then let the director and editors take over since the writers were done.
