New HD or start to buy 7.1 Surround Sound - Blu-ray Forum

Hello again everyone, I've been going on for years now with my current HDTV (Sony WEGA 36" 1080i CRT Widescreen) that I bought at BB in 2004. My question to you guys is, should I go ahead and start putting into place a surround sound system or go ahead and get a new HDTV? I plan on moving out of my apartment in May, and really do not feel like lugging this 300 lb beast to my next one. What do you guys recommend? I really feel like I need to enjoy some surround sound goodness, but I don't want to lug a bunch of stuff and reconnecting it all back up. Help please!!!!!!

Myself, I would rather have good surround sound than the best picture possible. You could use both, so it is really up to you on what is most important....

A good or Great surround system would be very nice, but as You wrote, do you really want to lug that 300 lb beast ANYWHERE?!

. Hell No if you ask me. I sold my 35" Sony Beast a year or so ago and it was just under 300 lbs. The guy I knew, so I told him to bring a friend. I had just picked up my 50" Samsung DLP so my bro' and I "slid" the Sony into the kitchen under a towel. Since you're moving in just 5 months, I'd get the New HDTV and save more $$$ for the Surround system. Then you can hook it up in the new joint, and won't have to "re-connect" anything. Plus, moving your new TV will be much easier than the 300lb one. You'll be doing it hopefully just once. Enjoy & Good Luck!

Have you currently got surround sound?

I feel you need to have surround sound to get the full HD experience.

step 1: establish a home theater budget

step 2: I would do some research on speakers and recievers on the net or in magazines and then after your moved in buy.

If it were me...... and the tv still worked fine.... I'd go with the surround sound first. Nothing helps to really draw you into a movie more than surround sound.

I agree here 100%. First off, you ain't gonna get any decent money for that behemoth anyway, so you may as well get the most out of it for now.

Also, if you do the surround now, you'll get a full HT experience and by the time you're ready for a new HDTV...the prices should have dropped significantly on all 1080p sets. It's win-win doing it this way IMO.

Thanks so much guys for the responses, keep 'em coming. I have no surround sound yet (No room with the beast, PS3, 360, Wii, HD DVR, MTA, Router, oh and DVD/VCR combo for old VHS home movies). Tha's why I'm kinda torn between the two, but after watching TDK for the fourth time surround sound would be incredible! Thanks again everyone for your submissions!
