Default Sony BDP-S550 remote stopped working

My remote for my 550 stopped working tonight. It was working fine this afternoon, and tonight I put a movie in and the remote won't work. I haven't installed a firmware update, and I've tried putting new batteries in to no avail.

What makes things worse, is that there doesn't seem to be any way to start a movie without the remote (ie: using buttons on the player).

Anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this? Does this mean that the remote is basically toast?

Thanks.

The remote could be bad, but it could be that the player isn't listening to the remote. It's possible that the new batteries are also dead.

Have you tried unplugging the player? If not try unplugging it for 5 mins and then plug it back in to see if it resolves the issue.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give that a try.

One thing that tells me that the remote is dead is that even the backlight feature on the remote has stopped working.

Is there anyway to actually get a blu-ray to play without the remote with the 550? I put the disc in and the main menu comes up with "Play" highlighted, but there's no way to actually get it to play.

Unfortunately not that I'm aware of with this player. Were you able to try another pair of batteries? It's strange that the remote was working earlier today but doesn't now (I would have assumed the batteries had become too weak).

If you have a universal remote you could program that to work with the BDP-S500. Otherwise, if you're still under warranty you can have Sony send another remote.

Tried several pairs of batteries. Pretty sure the remote just "died". The player seems fine, except for the odd feature of not actually having enough controls on the player to start playback without the remote. The player isn't that old, so I guess I'll have contact Sony and sit tight till I can get a new remote.

What a pain.
