Default Sony: No PSP2, Focus On Software

http://www.psxextreme.com/psp-news/1437.html

Quote:
Although it has been in the rumor bin a lot lately, Sony says they currently have no plans for a "PSP2."

According to MCVUK, SCEE president David Reeves has clarified the situation, and instead of another handheld unit, Sony is focusing on "continually improving the current generation of the handheld format." We already have a couple upgraded versions of the original PSP, anyway, resulting in a unit that's lighter, thinner, sleeker, and even more visible thanks to the latest addition of an enhanced LCD screen. At the same time, Reeves admitted the PSP needs more software - although 2008 saw several amazing titles like God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - and they remain dedicated to garnering more support for their handheld. The only problem is, the competition is quite stiff. Said Reeves:

"The PSP is as successful in numbers as PS2 it tracks its numbers in a cumulative basis. Its weakness, however, is its software. And thats because developers, when it comes to placing their bets, have to choose PS3 and 360, then Wii, then DS, maybe even PS2 before PSP. Its the same at our internal studios, where the focus has been on PS3. Theyve also focused a lot on PS2 as well because we have to get the SingStars out for that format. So PSP games will come they just take a while longer."

The PSP is one hell of a little machine, and provided Sony can drag in more high-profile titles, things should be fine. After all, the PSP just enjoyed its best year ever in terms of overall sales in Japan, and despite the odds, it has risen up the ranks. The DS is still king, of course, but the PSP is certainly holding its own. Now, about that software...
it wouldn't matter whether or not they are or aren't working on 2, they aren't going to admit it..so its not like this story is a surprise. but clearly if dev's are picking the psp last, why stick with it. make us a psp that hasn't been picked apart by hackers so we can have some friggin games!

I don't want a PSP2 for at least another 2 years, PSP will suffice until then, just give me more SW, ironically, SE (the company shafting Sony) is the only one with heavy support for the PSP next year.

An easy short term temporary solution would be more PSOne games on the PSN store (Japan and now Euro is getting that weekly).

When did Sony say that more major games are coming and then they didn't materialise? They've only started saying they need more software recently.

another thing is that they probably need to recoup their losses from the PS3, so we cant expect to see sony rolling out a fancy new PSP2 until they have made all of that money back

GTMobile wasn't reannounced for release in 2008 or 2009 was it?

Polyphony's made it clear that their focus is on GT5.

Of course. SCE promised it when PSP released way back in 2004, it's been four years and I still have no GTMobile.

DMC PSP is always good for a few laughs every year...

It was supposed to be a PSP launch title lol

And yeah I would buy GT and GT2 if they released those on the PSN Store just to hold me over.

Haha yeah, there was also supposed to be a RE game if I remember right. And a Elder Scroll Travels Oblivion....lol I would really like to see a GTA SAS though that is my favorite GTA ever, but instead they do a drop down Chinatown crap for the DS.

I need to get off my arse and actually get a PSP. That connectivity with the PS3 I've always thought sounds ace. And there's a bunch of games on there I want to play....

It's only taken me 4 years!
