Default Can someone explain Gamma

I've been having a hard time finding out what Gamma effects in terms of PQ in "English" on an LCD HDTV. I'm only curious because as I was checking out the display calibration setup on Wall-E, it "attempted" to give you instuctions on adjusting Gamma, and I want to expand my horizons so to say, and am curious on how to adjust the Gamma. What would it be listed as? My bet is on Backlight Intensity?

I have checked that, and I get the basic arrangement.
Backlight
Contrast
Brightness
Color
Tint
Sharpness
Color Temp

Anyone else have any ideas?

Thank Guys.
I think I understand it now. I'm not going to try to even attempt to adjust this on my tv.
