alrite, not sure which category my post falls under, so forgive me if i chose the wrong one ....
just picked up PS3 for Xmas, and like a total noob, thought it would be as easy as unpack... hook up .. and smile as i watch the flawlass picture and sound quality .. let me first say that my primary movie watching partner is very hard of hearing and uses earphones for audio .. so picture quality is my only concern, not audio. i started browsing some of the info around these forums, and bookmarking pages on calibration, etc, for reading tomorrow. So anyway, im wondering if my issue is one of hardware OR one of having my hopes set too high ... The first issue, is that it seems my primary display (LG, 42LB5D) goes all haywire (floating white pixels and screen flashes white every couple seconds, when i set my ps3 to the highest setting (1080p). At 1080i, the technical issues are gone... but the picture quality on blu ray movies seem very pixely (sorry if that is not a word lol) I am using an HDMI cable that came with the ps3 bundle purchased from blockbuster video... but i do not think that is the issue because i tried using a $70 monster cable i use for my satellite display (yes i now know its overkill, after reading the sticky on hdmi cables, wish i found your site sooner)... and that cable provided what i view to be a similar display ... So at its current settings, im seeing no difference between my HD satellite channels and my blu ray... Is that the goal? or were my expectations too high? so after a whole bunch of rambling i guess my question is this .... Did i expect too much from bluray, in thinking it was going to blow me away compared to directv 1080i ...OR .... is my TV (which i did not splurge on, a yr and a half ago when i bought it on sale) just not suffiecient to get the full display quality for ps3 blu ray quality... will upgrading my TV to a 1080p set make that much of a huge difference ??? please keep in mind have much of a noob i am .. before puchasing my TV, the extent of my knowledge was understanding the diff between 780, and 1080 .. and LCD and Plasma thanks in advance for the input and help ![]() |

As I reading, I'm trying to figure what it is your really asking? What is the bottom line to your problem.
You first stated that: thought it would be as easy as unpack... hook up .. and smile as i watch the flawlass picture and sound quality .. The end of that sentence you talk about sound quality. From what I have read your only using the TV speakers and no that's not going to wow you, not at all. I'm guessing your real ussie would be the 'haywire' with the floating white pixel and white flashes! That sounds like a serious problem, but you say its not there when you have something set at 1080i. When at 1080i it's pixelated. What are you setting at 1080i? the PS3? What about your HD Sat. does it come in completly clear? If so, have you tried to use a different HDMI input on your TV? to see if the same problem happens? You asked: will upgrading my TV to a 1080p set make that much of a huge difference ??? Your HDTV is 1080P from what you have said and the model number. |

Pixely image quality and white/black pixel blocks could just be the transfer quality of the specific blu-ray you happened to be watching - the intro to A Knight's Tale, for example, is really spotty but I don't recall ever seeing whole-screen flashes. And 300 is intentionally very grainy/pixely. If you were to pop in Ratatouille (or anything Tier 0 and see artifacts you definitely have a problem. Maybe tinker with the video colour setting on your PS3 (Y Pb/b Pr/Cr or RGB, etc..)? Quote:
Your ability to detect the difference though depends entirely on your vision. My parents can't see glaringly obvious diagonal lines caused from their standard cable connection over an rca video cable, for example, which I easily fixed with a digital cable box and an s-video cable, and yet they're really impressed with the blu-ray quality.. /shrug. Maybe try adjusting settings on your TV as well.. disable any video filters or power saving features, make sure any manual colour settings match the PS3. Also make sure you've done a System Update on your PS3 (and upgrade your TV's firmware if you can). Other than that, you got me. The PS3 really is pretty much just a plug and play device from my experience. Got pics? ![]() |

not sure if you mentioned if you did an update to the PS3, but if not, you may want to hook that sucker up and get it updated. There have been so many updates since I bought mine just this last summer. Get on the audio bandwagon too!...you shouldn't even watch Dark Knight without surround.
