Default Question About PlayStation3

Ok the PS3 supports 1080p/720p right? well I only have 1080i/720p, so does the PS3 auto switch to 1080i? or does it go to 720p?

480i, 480p, 720p and 1080p for games.

480i, 480p, 1080i, 1080p for Blu-Ray movies.

Until last week, I only had a TV that did 1080i and 480p. All the demos that had 1080p went down to 1080i. So, from my experience, 1080i does work in games with 1080p.

From what I understand it can do blu-ray in 720p but most discs are not authored in that resolution.

The key thing to remember is the PS3 does not scale. It'll only display in the native encoded format or a crappy 480p.

The PS3 will output some games at 720P/60 and others at 1080P/60. Depending on the game. Movies are mostly 1080P. The PS3 will down convert 1080P games and movies to 1080I, 480P, or 480I if selected in the menu to do so. It will not down convert to 720P. It does support native 480I, 480P, 720P, 1080I, and 1080P.
Your best solution is to look in the manual of your display. If your display supports 1080P input select 1080P on the PS3. If your display supports 1080I input select 1080I output on the PS3.

The PS3 through HDMI does 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, depending on the program's resolution, and what you have checked on the crossbar from the display's capabilities. If your display can't do 1080p, PS3 sends it as 1080i. If the display can't do 1080, it sends that as 480. If the display can't do 720 it sends that as 480. On component it also does 480i

I think the PAL PS3's also have 576, no?

You can check 720 Blu-ray output with the National Geographic's Relentless Enemies BD if you have it. No, the program is not in 720. But the opening Nat Geographic intro is. (You can also access it on the menu extras.)

720 looks just fine. I wouldn't worry too much if you can't view your games in 1080p.
