Default WTF happened on amazon?

What's up with the sudden HUGE sales spike of all the hd-dvd titles on Amazon.com? Did they organize one of their "buy" days or something? I realize Amazon.com is only one seller and the videoscan #s will likely continue to show large BD advantage in sales #s but it seems odd.

From that forum: If there is a strong demand for HD DVD software, then hopefully Blu-ray only studios will at least go neutral.

Yes, one day of increased demand, followed by weeks of the same old story, will cause Disney to rethink it's strategy for an entire format. I wish I had that kind of logic, then maybe I'd see the need for an HD-DVD player so I could watch Barry Manilow's concert, an HD-DVD exclusive.

The HDDVD guys were keen to pick a time of the month that was basically a no-release week for Blu-ray and a big release week for HDDVD(or atleast their biggest in sometime). Unfortunately for HDDVD fans, Corporations don't plan around one days worth of sales results, or a week for that matter. They look at Fiscal year, or Quarterly results. CES 2007 was an indication of what we can expect for this year it was all Blu....however, if BD continues to take this "we won already" mantality and not Finish it off with big releases like Spiderman series, Bad Boy 1&2, Charlies Angels, The patriot, etc. Then who knows how much more market share HD could gain!

The BDA needs to get their BD+ kickin in high gear so Fox can get back on board 100%. MGM has a great catalog, but hasn't done dirt yet. And Warner...please, can we get Matrix, V for Vendetta, T3, Troy etc like last week please?

Right now the studio that is carrying BD the best is Disney...Who'd a thought?

I really thought I would have sold off all my HDDVD stuff by now, But I gotta admit, things are looking up for the Red format, my player works the best it ever has with 2.1 and releases are picking up, I blame Blu-ray for not unleashing shock & awe This war could be over already

hd-dvd huge day? i only see 3 hd-dvds in the top one hundred... not too impressive considering bluray has had 3 in the top one hundred numerous times and with out a mass buying scheme.

I agree with this. The lack of Fox titles is really starting to get annoying. The BDA needs to do whatever is needed to get Fox releasing again. Fox is sorely missed on the release schedule now. I once did a title count of my "gotta have it in High Def" titles. Fox had over 25% of these titles. If anyone's curious, here's the studio breakdown for me:
Fox 26.5%
NL/WB 20.0%
Paramount 20.0%
Sony 11.5%
Disney 11.5%
Universal 9.0%
LG 1.5%

Nice one day burst for HD-DVD.

However, all things must come to an end and so by next month, we'll be in the lead again

BD already owns the 1st quarter and needs to fail miserable to let HD-DVD get the 2nd quarter...

because, honestly...BD is going to crush the rest of the year....

Spider-man series...POTC series...6 movies that are guaranteed to marinate in the top 10....

Sony has key releases set for every quarter...

I want to see Snatch available also...since I believe it's an exclusive...

The fact that they were able to get the Planet Earth HD-DVD preorder into Amazon's top 5 list shows

a.) how easy it is to bias a retailers sales data when they are targeted exclusively for a specific action (i.e. everyone buys a disc from them on the same day), and

b.) that HD-DVD owners are so starved for decent content that the only HD-DVD movie to break into Amazon's top 10 is a documentary.

Can anyone else say outlier data? My guess is that this brief sales spike will drop like a rock in the next couple of days.

Everyone makes very good points; outliers are just that, outliers! Things will get back to normal this coming week. Maybe we should all do a Blu-ray day! Like every last day of the month; or first day of the month. Or, we could all just keep doing what we are doing and still be outselling HD-DVD like we have been.

In the Bargain section, I mentioned possibly having a sale day for Blu-ray.com on Wednesday. I would just create a specific category for that day, and drop some prices with maybe 10-15 titles.

If anyone's looked at this on eproductwars.com/dvd, and looked at the "Total copies in stock" at amazon graph - in the last 24 hours it has not dipped all that much, which suggests that most of the orders placed were pre-orders which (if one were thinking that some hd-dud zealots were being nefarious) doesn't require any expenditure of cash, are easy to cancel and would give that nice temporary spike we're seeing now.

Well the members of PS3forums are already planning to set up a Blu-ray buying spree on April 21st (this coming Saturday) to counter the April 15 spree of HD-DUD.

http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=68573

15 people there are already confirmed to join the spree this coming Saturday.

It's in June 20. By then we should have about 260 titles, (HD DVD having managed only 191 in the same time period), and maybe even more if the Fox-MGM titles start rolling again before that date.

About the Ps3 forum planned spike, the hd dvd people have had like a month? (or was it more?) preparing for this (saving up and mmm getting multiple Amazon accounts) (I keeed!. Maybe. ) and the BD one has a week??

That would be really nice, but I believe there are far too many of us to really focus like the HD DVD group. I don't know if a lot of Blu-ray owners get on forums like this one. It's usually the HD DVD people that live in HD DVD forums (like AVS) and therefore are able to reach a good deal of them at one time.

Hell, if it was possible to reach the same percentage of Blu-ray owners at one time for disc buying, the sales numbers would be ridiculous! We could have 10 to 20 titles in the #1 spot at one time!

What do you all think?
