Default Final Destination(WB sucks)

You know i like this movie, i like alot of new line movies, and it grinds my gears to know that WB is going to be handling all of new lines transfers and soundtracks. it was fine the way it was, NL had DTS-MA 24 bit chosen and these guys have to come in and turn everthing to dolbyTrueHD/16bit/dialnorm. the biggest movie of the year TDK had a 16 bit soundtrack and the PQ wasn't even perfect, how do you mess that up? now i have to look forward to all future NL titles on blu-ray to be handle by these stooges.

And to everybody getting excited about lord of the rings on blu-ray.....heh

New Line released terrible Blu-rays aside from one, Shoot 'Em Up. Sure, the audio had slightly better specs, but the video was TERRIBLE. Consistent DNR on just about every title. And most of the WB releases coming out now that look so bad are New Line hold-overs.

And what has WB done wrong in their handling of New Line titles? I know WB has only done lossy audio on some of their own titles, but their New Line ones seem to all have lossless. And this Dolby TrueHD / Dial norm hate is ridiculous. TrueHD is lossless, aka identical to the master. DTS-HD MA can't be any better since identical is identical. And Dial norm is not a negative feature - it's just a single setting that tells your receiver to internally lower the volume. No dynamic range is lost, and it can be completely negated by a quick turn of the volume knob. Yes, the 16-bit issue may be a legitimate point, but only for newer films (2003 at the earliest) that have 24-bit soundtracks, and even then the real-world difference is questionable.

So how about we wait for releases before judging them? For everything WB has done wrong, I still trust them a heck of a lot more than New Line.

"Mongol" - New Line Home Entertainment
Kit Kittredge: An American Girl - New Line Home Entertainment
Journey To The Center Of Earth - New Line Home Entertainment
The Women - New Line Home Entertainment

There are several other New Line releases with unknown audio specs... which may or may not have "lossless".

Still, I agree with most of your points... regarding PQ, DTS-HD MA, etc.

I do admit to prefering DTS-HD MA since I own a PS3 and an AVR without HDMI, but hopefully it won't be an "issue" for me much longer.

Sorry, but "The Women" does NOT need lossless. I could hear then chatting up a storm in Dolby Digital just fine.

ALL films NEED "lossless". The other studios do it, so there is no excuse for New Line/WB to not offer it with "The Women" as well.

As you may know, kids, NL and Warner are one and the same.
NL started out great with DTS HD MA, and personally I wish they would go back to it.
And for that matter, Warner needs to try a BD or two (at least) with DTS HD MA. Can you imagine "The Dark Knight" in DTS HD MA? Yum-O!!!

Yeah, what is this "Dialnorm" anyway. The disc specifically tells the receiver to play itself more quietly than necessary? What's up with that? I'm finding that a lot of Dolby TrueHD tracks I've heard recently are fairly dull compared to DTS MA. I've even preferred the lossy DD5.1 track in some instances.

It's bad enough having to select the damn HD track at the start of the film on WB titles as it is, without having to remember to also compensate the volume level for this "Dialnorm" thing.

My default volume setting is -20db.

When I crank up to -13db or something I do tend to hear some distortion in the treble and the player's internal crossover just doesn't seem quite natural.

Player: Panasonic BD-55
Receiver: Denon 3805

That sounds like an issue with your set up. But the tracks are actually just 4db quiet and then through metadata the reciever detects the Dialnorm and turns it up 4db (or however many DB it's been flagged for). It shouldn't distort when you manually turn it up.
