Default Terrible lip synch on The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!??

I'm watching it on AMC HD right now and its aweful. I watched Hang 'em high right before and it was spot on so I know its not the channel. Actually, I think I recall buying this movie for my dad last year or so and it was the newer remastered version or something and it was way off too. Anyone got any info on why the lip sync is so off on this movie.

Come on man, you have to give them a little slack. It's a low budget movie and most of the actors are dubbed from Italian. They would just shoot the movie with everyone speaking their own language and then dub it over later with voice actors. If you look they actually did a really good job matching lips with what they had. It's one of the better looking english dubs I've seen.

Have to agree with you there. It's not perfect but that should not detract from this being, in my opinion, an absolutely monumental movie.

Out of interest, there is a special feature on one of the recent Spaghetti DVD releases (can't remember which one) that focuses on Mickey Knox and his job of fitting lines of dialogue with the lips of the foreign actors for the English language version.

I'm guessing you've probably seen that though Belloche!

Was this on AMC in True HD, or were you watching an SD movie on the AMC HD channel?

I've been waiting and waiting to see this in HD. One of my all-time faves...

Those Western would be awesome in Blu-ray. Instead of some of the films we see released, they should get those classic Eastwood Western ready.

many european nations, but especially the italians, routinely dubbed all of their films - even the ones meant for their own people, never intended to export - up even through the mid-80s as a cost-cutting measure. it was familiar and considered normal there, part of their aesthetic. leone's film weren't necessarily being originally recorded in italian - they really are speaking english, but they never intended to record sound on location. it's part of what makes those films so different, coming out of traditional hollywood westerns. all the sound was added artificially later, wind, footsteps, guns cocking, shots fired. if they didn't cook it up and add it, it's not there. it gives the films an other-worldy aspect you wouldn't have exactly otherwise.

strangely, in the middle of typing that, my computer coughed up the piece of music played over the scene where clint is stumbling through the desert... there is about 30 gigs of music on my computer, and the tracks comes up randomly. weird!

There's an import of Fistful of Dollars that looks enticing. I'll probably wait for a US release though.

Here's some screenshots I found:

While you are correct about lots of lines and especially sound effects being re-done in post, most of the non-principals (that is, not Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef or Eli Wallach) were European and usually Italian. The stars have spoken several times about inherent difficulties in communication while filming, as very few understood any English.

Hang 'em High wasn't a spaghetti western like the Dollars Trilogy (Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly). Don't let it bog you down though, they're still terrific movies. TGTB&TU is still one of my all time favorite movies.
