Default Le Pont du Nord (1981)

Jacques Rivette's "Le Pont du Nord" (1981) will be released by Kino Video next February. The film was previously released in the UK by Eureka, and will possibly be sourced from the same master. I've provided a trailer created by them below.

Quote:
Marie is a claustrophobic ex-con who, shortly after wandering into Paris, encounters the wild and potentially troubled young woman Baptiste. Baptiste accompanies Marie on her quest to solve the mystery behind the contents of her former lover's suitcase.

Question

thanks a lot for the review!
For someone like me who can read region A and region B, what release would you recommend ?
the MoC/Eureka or the Kino release ?

I usually prefer MoC over Kino releases, but I think this will be an exception. I'm kind of glad I was lazy in picking this one up given that the Kino has a few additional supplements.

Hello Mr. Pupkin

The transfers come from the same master and both look very, very good (even when projected).

The visual essay on the U.S. disc isn't something that will pique your interested, but the video essay is excellent. It highlights some of the key locations in the film -- but you have probably already visited them. For U.S. viewers it will be good to have

I hope you are well.

It's a wonderful disc and we need more Rivette on blu-ray. I imposter the Japanese "La Belle Noiseuse" and added my own English sub track, but while claiming to be an HD remaster, the disc barely looks better than my previous import DVD (and is 1080i to boot). We need a full remaster of that title pronto.

Bates Motel,

There are no new HD masters for the big Rivette films. This is the reason why they are not on Blu-ray yet. (I have checked).

They will come out eventually.

Not new, but I found this post by you regarding La Belle Noiseuse:

I wasn't expecting much, but I took the chance on it anyway. Since the packaging proclaims "new HD remaster" I just figured it would be better than an upconvert, but I guess we are all going to have to wait longer. It's certainly not a "pretty good HD master," just FYI, in case you haven't seen the disc.

Not the Japanese release, and this isn't the master I was referring to.

The information I have comes directly from a British party that has inquired about various Rivette films very recently (January).

p.s.
I would be very careful with Japanese Blu-ray release of European films. There are a number of exclusive releases of French films in Japan that are anything but impressive. (Some good Malle releases, though).

This just popped up on Janus Films' website, so it appears as if Janus Films/Criterion are now the rights holders.

The current BD appears to be OOP, so if it is re-released, expect it from the gray C.
