Default New pricing structure

If the studios want to speed up blu ray disc sales I think they should have pricing depending on perceived value of the movie. For example, I have no problem paying $30 for The Dark Knight or Wanted because I am going to get the most out of the blu ray experience out of effects driven action/scifi films. What I DO have a problem with is paying the same price for Hot Rod or 40 Year Old Virgin on blu ray.

I never owned 40 Year Old Virgin or Hot Rod on DVD, and I really want them because they are funny movies. I don't want to buy the DVD because, well, I am all blu now! I also don't feel as though comedies give you the most valuable blu ray experience you know? I think a $25 to $30 price point for movies like TDK and Wall-E are appropriate but I think comedies and such such should be in the $17 - $20 price point.

Does anyone agree?

it seems that is the trend right now, just not at release date.. most comedy movies drop in price within 2-3 weeks of being released... fry's had 40 year old virgin for 8.99 a few weeks ago lol

Comedies are plenty worth it on Blu to the majority of us here.

I do agree that the pricing could be altered a little. But not by your criteria.

Makes sense to me.

BTW, I picked up The 40-Year-Old-Virgin for $9 on Black Friday at Fry's. Keep browsing the Hot Deals section since you never know what might turn up.

i see your point, but you also have to look at it from a different angle. what if a good comedy or drama was worth as much to someone as good special effects action movies are to you? there can't be a value scale based on movie content

hot-rod I would buy on Blu for 4.99. I actually liked the movie, just don't think it is worth the extra money for a high-def version of it though.

40 Year Old Virgin is a great movie! Basically anything that Judd Apatow has his hands in is great. By the way, it's $15.49 at Amazon right now, $19.99 at Wal-Mart. So no need to pay $30 for it.

you can't justify different prices for different genres. that doesn't make any sense.

I think I could justify it. A good sci-fi with 7.1 sound would easily be priced at $30, while a comedy that has no sound effects, no visual effects and would not benefit from an HD transfer would clearly not be in the $30 price bracket. Would you pay $30 for Hot-Rod on blu? for $9.99 I would buy it though.

Sorry, I really can't get behind a pricing structure based on genre. Remember, Blu-Ray is still attempting to grow and maintain a mainstream foothold. It doesn't make sense to charge more for "eye candy" types of films when it's movies like these that drive a format's acceptance.

i could get behind some pricing like this. i'd maybe consider buying comedies on blu then.

right now for me, i only buy the special effects eye candy movies on blu. i had a really hard time buying 27 Dresses on blu for my wife, i personally don't see a need for a movie like that on blu.

You are looking at the pricing structure from a very narrow point of view. There are people that think that 40 Year Old Virgin is worth the $30 while Wanted is barely worth $5 in a Walmart bin. They are targeting the people that love comedies and not action movies when they have 40 Year Old Virgin, Pineapple Express, etc. at full value.

People will buy the movies they love regardless of the price, and those are the ones that they target new release prices at. If you don't feel it's worth that much, wait for a sale.

I have payed an average of about $14 per movie for a wide variety of movies. I have 135. I will never pay more than $20, and I will only pay that amount if it is a new release blockbuster. As long as you look around and are patient, you can pretty much get any movie for between $10 and $20 on average.

I don't agree with the OP. If there are movies that hold a lesser value to YOU, wait for the sale. It will come. It wouldn't make sense for the whole Blu-Ray industry to attach lower sale prices for comedies.

You liked HOT ROD?!?!?!

I never heard that from somone before...

Back to topic... I think it would be nice if the prices would be adjusted, but it could be hard to find criteria to base the prices off of.

i wouldn't pay $30 for any movie blu-ray or not (with the exception of a few collector's editions). i wait for sales, which i suggest you do. i wouldn't want to pay more for a movie because it had sound and visual effects. that's ridiculous.
