Default I'm about to give up on Blue Ray

Older BR discs play fine but the new ones crash my computer.

Gigabyte MB X38T-DQ6
Intel E8400 Duo 3.0GHz
2G OCZ Ram
ATI HD 3870 1G
Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic
LG GGC - H20L
LCD Samsung LN46A550

I use WinDVD 9 Plus.

All divers, firmware, BIOs...etc are updated. Except for the LCD firmware.

Older Blue rays seem to play fine but newer ones freeze up the program and I get the blue screen of death. I've tried Cyberlink Power DVD 8 ultra but it will not even play. A message pops up and says "not able to play the protected content on your digital output device" I've use the BD advisor and it says everything checks out fine.

At first I thought it could be the memory, so I changed it out but still get the same problem. I originally had the Lite-On drive and change it to the LG which didn't work. The only thing I can think of now is MAYBE the sound card.

Side note I bought Iron Man and it didn't play that is when I changed memory and then it played fine. Now its back to not playing.

Right now I have no clue whats going on and I'm about ready to put my Blue ray discs on E-Bay. Posting here is the last thing I can do before giving up short of going forking out money for a player and sound system to hook up to the TV.

I hope some one can help me out.

You might have better luck if you tried to play a Blu-ray disk, AKA BD.

That might explain the problem that you are having.

Also, how is your computer hooked up to the display? It sounds like you might have a DRM issue

+1

Do you have a regular monitor that you can test this on rather than the Samsung LCD TV?

Now if you said it was Vista, I would have told you to check if the 2GB of RAM are enough, but XP shouldn't have a problems with it.

Thats is right there, I hate to be this way, but a SA player would fix your problem in no time at all. Not to mention a PS3 Im a Mac person my self, so there's no need to worry about BD play back ! LOL!!!! I don't care for a BD player/burner in my Mac....sure it be nice , but I really want a stand alone so I can record off HDTV !!! I can't wait

What other options do you have to connect your computer to the TV.
Just want to double check if this is really DRM issue or some computer problem.
Even if its not HD output, just try and connect it and see what happens.

Where did you get the DVI - HDMI cable? Did it come with PC or TV ?

Agreed. It's Microsoft you need to give up on. They make crap products. The only people still buying them are just trying to get older stuff working or just believe the next MS OS may just work.

Say what?
I have an 2 1/2 year old XP MCE 2005 laptop - will play *and burn* Blu-ray Discs.
This is a Vista Home Premium laptop - will also play all Blu-ray Discs.

Sonny, Record HDTV? Uhm, I can...

To OP, can you connect the monitor via VGA?
All of this is not an OS issue(contrary to what some have posted).
This is an HDCP issue and VGA will usually "persuade" it away.
There is also a piece of software out there that will "fix" this issue, but the Mods here get irate when it gets mentioned.

"Allows you to watch movies over a digital display connection, without HDCP-compliant graphics card and without HDCP-compilant display. No need to buy an expensive monitor."

I would not get a PS3. I've heard that they turn into bricks periodically and you have to send them back to get them fixed. Not my idea of fun.

Get a Panasonic. I've never had playback issues, and I've never seen anybody say anything bad about it. It's probably the best player out there.

A PS3 will fix your problems and your discs should play fine. If/when you do, remember to keep the firmware up to date.
Good luck pal.

-1 The PS3 rarely gets bricked.

+1 IF you want a standalone. But PS3 if you're into gaming or plan on gaming in the next several years.

To everyone that offered good advice (Dadkins, and people that recommended another player thank you - you do this site service).

To everyone with cheap, rude remarks

To the OP, it appears that your LCD is HDCP compatible, I've had the same problem occur with WINDVD 9 Plus BD before. What you generally have to do is update your keys (you can do this from the WinDVD site - I have that program not because of BD but because of its superior upconversion capabilities). I usually use Total Media Theater when I'm watching BD. You should try this program. The PS3 is a viable option but I would opt for a Standalone myself. Don't give up on this medium yet - I know you know its great, you are just going through a few bugs thats all. Its just like a standalone that I purchased a while back but never listed it because it didn't work correctly - until I found out about it's new firmware release that corrected all of its previous problems. The firmware had been out for a while but I enjoyed my HTPC so much that I didn't bother.

I finally took it off the shelf and updated all of its firmware. Now I have a standalone and a HTPC (believe it or not - I think I like the sound from the PC better - even though I can see the DTS -HD Master lights and such on my Yamaha. I'm going to do a comparison. The player is an LG -BH200. I'm on this site occasionally now (until some issues are cleared) but I check my PM's every now and then. Give me a PM and I will be glad to help - Dadkins is also a great HTPC help.
