What Sub? - Blu-ray Forum

Trying to figure out some information about this sub. It was a gift(freebie) works decent. The only info I can find Model # AP-A120 and DA-1000.SUB, The previous owner said it was a Design Concepts Inc(DCI) sub. Any ideas?

There was a compnay by the name of Design Acoustics that made speakers about 15-20 years ago. They were part of Audio Technica. A few of their speakers are available on Ebay. The logo DA looks familiar.

You can actually replace the driver of the sub and turn it into a first class subwoofer. Read Repairing, Upgrading, & Building Subwoofers. Also see the last couple of posts. Someone else just replaced the woofer of an old subwoofer.

So basically from reading the first bit of that post I need to find a driver the same size as the one in the DA sub and replace that? Is that all? SOunds too easy.

It is very easy and can be done in 1 hour. If the subwoofer doesn't have enough poly-fill, you can buy some from Part-Express or Wal-Mart and add some more. The sub will sound better with proper dampening, but don't over-fill the sub. Also, if the new driver does not have it, add some gasketing tape around the driver for an air-tight seal.

A few tweaks with your new driver (Big Daddy mentioned above what to do) and you'll be set. It is that easy.

Ok I looked at my sub last night and this is what I got. Took off this back plate.

And have this staring at me.

Its only a 10" driver and a VERY tight fit to get out of that hole.

The driver is facing the rear of the cabinet.

The driver must somehow come out diagonally. It also appears that this sub needs some poly-fill.

Yeah I got the sub out diagonally. There was "some" fill behind the sub(which would be the front of the cabinet) You can "kinda" see some of the "fill" here.

Is the design of the sub bad/good/ok? Would it be worth upgrading?

Have you used it? How does it sound? If the sub sounds good to you, it may be worthwhile to upgrade it. There are plenty of good drivers that are below $100.

The design is very unusual. Normally, the higher frequency bass sound comes directly out of the driver and the lower frequency bass sound comes out of the ports. In this case, it appears that they designed the sub to output the deeper bass.

Since the driver is facing inward, you may want to use Dampening Sheets and 1/2" Acoustic Foam or 1" Acoustic Foam instead of Poly-Fill.

Is it that bad? What I am wondering is if I get a sub that is deeper than the current one there is no way I can get it through the hole that is in there now.

Can't you just put it in sideways? If it doesn't completely fit, grind down the sides of the rim or the driver.

The opening on the box is only 6 7/8" X 8 7/8". 10 7/8 from corner to corner. The driver in there now measures 4 3/8. Here is a pic on how you have to remove it.

Bad quality but you understand

I found THIS sub on Elemental designs that has the height requirement of less than 4 3/8".

Anyone have any other suggestions on drives that would fit through that hole like that?

That would still be an upgrade. $70 shipped for that driver isn't so bad though.
