Default Sound From My Non-HDMI Receiver

I have a Samsung BD-P1500 player and an NAD receiver without HDMI inputs. I connected the HDMI cable from the player to the back of my Samsung TV and the optical audio cable from the back of the player to the receiver hoping to get surround, but the sound is coming from my TV speakers. I went into the audio settings of the player and selected Bitstream (re-encode) as per the manual's suggestion for a receiver like mine, but I think I need to be doing something with the receiver.

How should I troubleshoot, and is there anything else I should be doing? Thanks for any replies.

You'll get sound with that configuration from your TV...simply turn the volume to 0 (all the way down). Now, make sure that whatever input you're selecting on your receiver is matched to the optical input. Most(?) receivers have inputs that can be changed around. I'd bet that if you switched inputs on the RCVR as the disc plays you'll find sound but it'll be on an input other than DVD, or what ever it is.

VinnAY,

Thanks. I finally figured it out. I have to go into my receiver's menu and select Optical 1 as the input setting and I get the surround. The only aggravation is having to go back in and change the input setting back to watch regular television. It would be nice to be able to not have to do that, but it's minor. I'll deal until I get a new receiver.
