Smile Question regarding LG Burner and AVCHD

I have a Sony Hdr-SR1 camera that records high Def in AVCHD. I just bought an LG GGW- H20 L internal Blu Ray burner which was at thetop of the list on PC World's Top 10 List. Oddly it will burn AVCHD onto DVD's but not onto Blu Ray disks. On them it burns something different BVAD or BvLD (I'm sorry I can't remember but there seem to be two and they look something like those with 4 letters each)

Anyway I also bought a Sony BX1 player which plays both disks just fine. But why can't I burn AVCHD on a Blu ray? Plus, does it matter? I just thought it would be best to keep the original format for best quality. I have not yet burned a DVD and a Blu ray in the 2 formats and then compared the quality. Actually my TV isn't even Hi def.

This video hobby is awfully confusing. The huge number of formats is like learning an entire new language. I just want to be able to save the footage in the best quality I can and also in a form that can actualy be viewed years from now. Sheesh I still need to figure out 1080P vs 1080i. What's up with that?

The only reason I even have time for this right now is because I was laid off from my job the day after Christmas. BTW Happy New Year.

i have the exact same setup camera/bluray writer, AND i just got laid off too! your issue is software. the sony software is somewhat limited, ive never tried using the software that comes with the lg drive, but that might work. i use the latest version of sony dvd architect, 5 i think, allows you to create bluray discs with your avchd files, i think nero might too. OH wait, just put a bluray disc in, and use the camera software, i think it just makes a bigger avchd disc on a bluray, there might be some option to change, or it will tell when u put the disc in. avchd on dvd is the same original quality, its just writing data on the dvd, its not a real dvd and it won't play in a dvd player. with a bluray disc you would just get more space, a lot more space. sorry its late so this might not make sense

Being laid-off is no fun! Good luck. However, a job search cannot take up your entire time, unless the job market is hot enough to produce a new lead every day, which is of course not the case at the moment, unless your field is bankruptcy, foreclosure, repossession, or credit collection. Who knows, maybe videography will (surprise, surprise) yield a lead or a way.

Your Sony Hdr-SR1 probably came bundled with software to burn simple AVCHD-DVDs to normal DVD media, but (unless I'm mistaken) will not let you burn the same stuff to BD with 4x the allowable size.

The latest Vegas, Premier Elements, PowerDirector, Pinnacle Studio, Nero, and Ulead packages allow one to edit and burn BDs. Roxio offers BD burning software, but I believe one must convert AVCHD to another format for its editing platform to accept it. AVS and others also market inexpensive products that do the same. Just about all these products entail, however, a bit of IQ loss, unless one burns an unedited clip to disc with Nero. This would allow menus and chapters, but to add titles, effects, and other stuff, you'd have to use the editing platform, which would mean export of a recoded file to import later into the burning platform.

Thanks very much. I'll keep playing around until I get it right. Sorry to hear about you getting laid off too. I got it the day after Christmas

I have the Sony stuff that came with the camera and aso now have Pinnacle 12. Maybe there is something in it that I have not discovered yet so I'll keep exploring. Thanks for your help.
