Exclamation "An American Carol" issues anyone?

My Magnavox NB500MG9 played the previews on disc ok but then the disk icon in top right of screen would just spin and then player went into stop mode, locked up. Reloaded disk same result.

Unhappy Sylvania NB501SL9 "An American Carol" Playback Issue

I found this forum because I, too, have the issue with An American Carol. I received the disc yesterday from Blockbuster Online. The disc appeared to be brand new, as there were no imperfections on the surface. It appeared untouched.

I have the Sylvania NB501SL9, which is a clone of your Magnavox unit, I think.

It played through the first two previews, then appeared to be "stuck" loading the next chapter. After a couple of minutes the stop icon appears on the screen and you are unable to go further.

I called Sylvania (Funai) customer support, and they said they didn't believe there is a firmware update, but to talk to the parts department anyway. The parts department said Sony has released a firmware update, but Funai does not have the firmware yet, and when they do, it will be a $17 charge to obtain the DVD with the update.

I'm going back and forth on whether to return the unit because I got such a good deal ($149.99 sale - $20 Santa Bucks (Meijer) + tax = $137.78) and it plays all of my other discs thus far. It's disappointing that we have to pay for firmware updates, though. Possibly I, or someone, can provide an ISO image for others who have the same issue (once it becomes available), if Funai is not able to provide a download for their customers.

They better provide updates for free or they will be getting this BD player thrown through a corporate window!!!

You probably need a firmware upgrade. It played fine on my PS3.

Same issue here. No firmware updates that I can find.

I'd have to take a guess and say that is only if you want their firmware DVD. I'd hope any sensible company would allow for the download (and burning) of the firmware. Withholding the firmware for money is just asking for an influx of hate mail and/or returns of their product. It'd not be a smart business move.

Oddly enough, the customer service representative nearly encouraged me to return the product when I expressed my disgust at a $17 upgrade, noting that I should do whatever best fits my needs.
