There should be a setting on the laptop to change the output to an external monitor. It's hard to say exactly how to do this without knowing what graphics card you are using.

I'm not aware of any laptop that has hdmi-in, so my guess is it is hdmi-out.

Depending on your gx card, there should be an icon in the control panel to let you set the resolution of the output.

Typically, to switch output from your laptop LCD to hmdi, there should be a F key on the top row that has a symbol of a monitor. Lets say it is F8. Press & hold Fn and hit F8 should let you switch display.

What kind of laptop is it? It is more than likely an HDMI Out, I have an Acer Aspire 8920G With a Blu-ray drive and HDMI Out, its cool to use the computer with the tv as a monitor too

VAIOs here, it's FN + F7.

Yes, they do work fine, don't they?
