as long as it has at least component video inputs, yes, it will be fine.

I think depending on the player that it will even work with svideo and other connectors but you won't get a high def picture.

I'd work on getting the HD TV set first. I do not think you would get any benefits unless you have a decent sound system hooked up.

I've never heard of a HDD Dvd player. If you don't have an HDTV/HD projector, there is no use buying into a HD player...period.

I think the total opposite, if you're sure you are going high def in the future, I'd buy a Blu-ray player now, (perhaps the PS3 as its great and cheap) and star amassing my Blu-ray high def movie collebtion, instead of buying those movies in "obsolete" DVD (which will need to be replaced later!) and then save up later for the 1080p HDTV which by the time you buy it will be much cheaper than if you buy it now!

But, Blu-ray players will be cheaper in the future as well. I would say when it is time for you to buy a High-Def player (now or in the future), make sure you get the one that provides you with the most contain and have the best specs. Everything else will fall into place cause that choice would be Blu-ray.

But, you definitely have a great point about the movie collection.

Also even on standard 480I TV’s BLU-RAY movies sometimes look better then DVD since BLU-RAY has less digital artifacts since it uses much higher bit rates then DVD.

Indeed. Depends entirely on how sensitive you are to various forms of compression artifacting. I've never built up a large DVD collection because I'm not happy with the PQ possible on standard DVD.

Cheap HDTV CRT TV’s can be found at Walmart for around $349. Sometimes cheap 37 inch LCD 1080P monitors can be found on clearance under $1,000 from time to time. JVC and Sony also make some nice LCOS rear projectors. You can get a JVC HD-52FA97 52 inch 1080P for $1295 for final delivery price from various places.

Think of it this way: if he buys 1 DVD a week in a year he'll have spent between $700 and a $1000 in old technology with an image that's up to 8 times worse than a BD. (And don't forget about the sound). So mmm that's kind of wasted money

Also, a BD player is cheaper than a good HDTV display relatively, so if he waits a year or two that $800 BD player might be $400 less, while that $1600 HDTV might be $800 less, so he saves even more buying player first, display later.

Also he seems to have a 52'" TV. Even if it's only 480, he'll get some benefit from BD playback like cleaner and sharper images, specially much sharper and cleaner color which will be at full 480 x 720 (instead of DVDs 240 x 360)
Specially if his TV has component/progressive 480 inputs etc.

There's yet another fringe benefit which not only benefits him, it benefits humanity if he buys a BD player and BDs first and now.

He'll be contributing to the War. More BDs will be sold more BDs will be in stores , his friends might also see them and generate interest which in turn might lead to more sales, more titles and by the blu-butterfly effect, it becomes a chain reactioN and less hd dvd is sold proportonally and and the sooner the war will end and we'll al be happier

Why do you think the Pyros try to start fires everywhere and seed early? A whole forest can be burned and it all starts with a little seed spark
