I wish it would happen. No Abyss or After Hours Blu Rays, just straight to 4K.
Thoughts? edit: What I mean to say, would you support all titles not currently on Blu Ray being released on UHD 4K as the premiere edition going forward. So now that UHD 4K is a reality, you won't have to buy a blu ray today that might be the inferior edition in a relatively short period of time? Last edited by Hazel Motes; 01-23-2018 at 12:10 PM. |

Unless I am misunderstanding your question.
It makes absolutely no sense to me. Why limit the "install base"? If it costs the same to put the Abyss on 4k and Blu-Ray, why kill that market? I have since stopped buying Blu-Ray in lieu of 4k (except for Dolby Atmos exclusives) but that still sounds crazy to me. |

Yeah screw those people who can’t afford to upgrade or don’t have any desire to. Who cares about their wants even if they are the majority?

yikes. easy. It was just a question. I guess I should rephrase as I didn't say it exactly as I wanted to. I don't mean stopping production of blu ray. But going forward, now that UHD looks like its not going away, I think UHD should start being released across the board for films that don't have blu rays currently.
For people like me who are going to keep supporting physical media, I like supporting the independent labels as much as I can, but with UHD 4K starting to roll out more and more I would prefer to buy a UHD disc now, as opposed to Blu Ray now and UHD of the same film in 2 years. I mean if I stop buying blu rays now, and so do others, in anticipation of UHD releases, thats money these labels are losing. I want to support them, but I don't want to waste money on discs that will be rereleased in possibly a short span of time. I think Criterion, Arrow, Shout, Kino, Indicator etc should have started producing UHD yesterday, while still focusing on titles that haven't been released on Blu Ray. This would only make sense if UHD titles dropped in price, and the video presentation is of sufficiently good quality. Unfortunately, none of those two things are guaranteed - if the HDR treatment is lackluster, it's like throwing away money if you can get the cheaper blu-ray copy.

As for the original question... no, that would be stupid and no studio would do it because they'd never see a cent of profit since releasing an expensive restoration straight to the nichest of niche formats would be a financial disaster. |

No, it would cripple BD and UHD. There needs to be BD/UV and UHD/BD/UV for at least the foreseeable future. However, I do think DVD only SKUs need to go the way of the Dodo for mainstream non-kids titles.

So both formats would be preferable, but I would choose 4k if forced to pick. The Abyss... sigh. |

I don't see the point in the question. I think people would approve for new catalog releases to premier simultaneously on 4K and Blu-ray. People have been praying for Criterion to go 4K, which would surely mean previously unreleased-on-BD films get the 4K treatment.

Since I don't own a 4k TV or a 4k player, and I'm quite satisfied with most blu-rays, I would be pretty pissed if they did so.

For me personally, as long as the 4K pack includes a regular Blu-Ray, I'd be fine with it since I'm getting those combo packs anyway now, but still have more use for the regular Blu-Ray for the time being.
That said, I get where others are coming from, and it will probably limit sales if they are forced to buy a 4K combo pack when they don't want to. It would be best just to release a 4K pack and regular Blu-ray pack at the same time. |

I approve, as long as they go straight to 4K UHD + Blu-ray combo packs like they are now.
I don't have the equipment yet to play 4K UHD discs, but I've been buying all of the newer movies in that format lately just to future proof the purchases, since it's only five dollars more and since a standard Blu-ray is included. |
