Default Planet of the Apes + PowerDVD8

Tried playing my Planet of the Apes Blu-Ray set today on my laptop using PowerDVD8 and AnyDVD HD, and it didnt work.

AnyDVD HD scanned the disc like normal, and then I went into PowerDVD and hit play, it seemed like it was going to load, but then it came up with 'stopped' in the upper right corner.

Had to hook up the old Samsung BD-P1400 instead, which had real problems with the menu system of Planet of the Apes (looked like it wasnt fully loaded).

Anyone else tried POTA yet on PowerDVD?

Check for firmware updates. If there isn't any wait for a few weeks and they will release one after lots of people complain.

I have HP quickplay too, what version do you have? I updated it once (148mb) after buying my laptop, but everytime I press 'update' it seems to have the same file, over and over again.

My quickplay says 'Get The Latest 3.7 V5822 Updates'.

AnyDVD HD has solved this problem, there latest update breaks the BD+ stuff that was preventing it from being played.

AnyDVD HD IS part of the problem. Everytime the makers of AnyDVD HD crack the new keys the studios change them. This in turn forces the software companies (Cyberlink, Arcsoft, Corel) to update their player's software so that new titles will play. This also drives new firmware for standalone players.

It's just a vicious cycle.

Any time you use software designed to defeat copy protection, you deserve whatever glitches and problems you get.

There shouldn't be a need for these items, but here we are!

Copying doesn't require defeating Copy Protection, that's the funny part!
The overly agressive CP does need to be backed off though. It isn't stoping anything.

You don't have to tell me about the non-support from Corel as I've experienced it first hand.

Yes, the other two do eventually get updated but what drives that update?

You can already see from this forum the issues that some members are having from updates and we shouldn't have to endure the inherent delays from new firmware updates.

However, I'd take new firmware any day vs. having to buy a new player.

You can't deny that AnyDVD is a part of the problem and is driving some of these updates. If they would simply back off you wouldn't have as many releases.

Believe me I'm a big proponent of being able to legally make backup copies of titles you alrady own ... but I don't condone piracy either.

Firmware for computer drives is different from STB player firmware updates.
My UJ-201S had a firmware update 12/13/2006 to 1.05 and hasn't needed one since.
This UJ-120 hasn't had one and all discs play fine.

One should kinda stay ontop of software updates, regardless of type.
BD player software is no different.
I stay on mine, I see no issue here.
OEM player software... pass!

No, AnyDVD is the fix to the problem.
I know of at least two people that were having some BS handshake issue with all HDCP compliant hardware and/or HDMI connectivity and AnyDVD HD made it work.
A cheap workaround, but it did work!

Blu-ray Discs can be, and have been, copied fairly easily without AnyDVD, but I cannot elaborate on it as I would rather not get suspended again or banned.
I am not a pirate, but I own a copy of AnyDVD HD.
I also have a few other "tools" that... well, you get the idea.

Piracy sucks!
HTPCs rock!

I don't think it's fair to compare firmware of a computer disc drive to the firmware of a standalone player. My drive hasn't needed a firmware update either but I think a more "apples to apples" comparison would be to compare the third party software player updates to the standalone firmware updates. Essentially, those are the two things that provide a similar function in the computer and HT realms.

I agree that one should stay on top of necessary firmware and software updates. I make sure my equipment is up to date and I've been working with computers for a long time. However, a large percentage of the population may not have that experience or be as savvy with the needs of the equipment. Shoot, some of the generations got by w/o computers and aren't interested in them now (and there's nothing wrong with that; those that are new are starting where we once started). However, updates affect not only the computer world but the HT realm as well.

The HDCP issues can be frustrating for those who do experience them, but ultimately it leads me to believe a piece of equipment in that chain is not complaint with the spec. Hence, you can't blame the BD technology or the BDA for the issue because they chose to include CP in the design. Ultimately, it's that manufacturer who isn't following the spec that's responsible.

There's a reason why SlySoft is listed in St John's Antigua and it has nothing to do with the weather. You're correct in that everyone who uses the software isn't doing so to pirate media however there is a percentage that is. Yet even those with good intentions end up funding a company that provides a means to those that don't. Slysoft's software removes the CP from the media which in essence leaves the door wide open because they don't even take measures to try and prevent others from using this content other than for their own use.

I wish we didn't need CP but ultimately this is just one of the reasons why the studios have chosen to use such features. They're trying to protect their intellectual rights and property. This is turn affects us "the user" of that content. We ultimately end up paying higher prices in the long run when the studios try to recoup some of those loses. Unfortunately, piracy will always exist and so will CP.

I'd love to have an economical way to store all of my media on a server where I can access it on the fly. Then I could store my physical media away until needed at a later date. Unfortunately, that doesn't exist for me right now. I'm sure one day in the future we will be there.

One wrong doesn't make another right. Yes, I'm aware that they are other means but that doesn't make AnyDVD right either.

My apologies for getting this thread off topic in the first place. In any event dadkins I do appreciate the good and healthy discussion that we were able to have.
