Default anyway to...

Is there anyway to make voices louder? I have trouble hearing some conversations and I don't want to turn up the master volume cuz then explosions and what not are too loud

you could turn up the center channels volume/level on the receiver, that might help a lot because the center is generally given most of the dialouge

the reason i ask is because i find that problems with dialoge are not as prevalent when using hd audio. I suggest that you connect your ps3 to your receiver via hdmi. Set your ps3 to output via liner pcm instead of bitstream. Now when you watch a blu ray make sure that you select either pcm, dts hdma or dolby true hd as your audio. See if there is any improvment there

I'm hooked up via hdmi with pcm 48 displayed on my receiver and dts hd ma displayed on the screen. Could I just turn up the treble on the receiver?

There are a couple options: Bump up the center channel, that way you'll have more dialog but explosions and such shouldn't be too much louder.

If you're using any kind of Dolby codec, turn on the Dyanamic Range Control in the audio settings of the PS3. This basically equalizes the volume so that explosions and such aren't overpowering in comparison to dialog. Just make sure you turn DRC off if you want to listen to something as it's meant to be.

That's what I do. On the equalizer, I turn down the lower frequences, up the mids a bit, and even out the highs with the mids for more treble, and I have the center +0.5db more than what SPL calibration came out to be for me. Personal preference.

Have you used a sound meter to set the channel levels? If not you might want to try this. As the other posters have suggested you could bump up the center level or use dynamic range controls as well.

One more expensive option is to upgrade the center channel. Each time I've done this I've noticed a huge improvement in hearing the dialog.

lol, the SPL meter'll run 1/2 what the speakers cost. It's a good suggestion, but maybe not worth the investment for the OP.

OP, just bump up the center channel a bit. I had to do the same thing when I ran those speakers (seems like a long time ago).

The two aren't mutually exclusive. At only 50 bucks, an SPL meter is a wise investment for anyone's home theater.

my receiver came with that auto calib speaker mic thingy. ill just bump up the center volume since that seems to be the easy thing to do.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you- I own one. However, they're intimidating at first, cost $50 and the calibration mic for Audyssey which is free gets it darn close. It's all based on worth, and while I'm making assumptions, I'm not sure that someone with about $150 invested in their speakers will consider it a worthwhile expenditure.

I have found that most dialogue is low as well. I did have my PS3 hooked up to my Samsung 50" when I first got it and the volume was low during most dialogue scenes. I could not turn up the volume either for fear an explosion was right around the corner. Having a kid and a wife prevents high volumes at night time. I setup a media room last year and still have the lower volumes issue. I checked my settings on the PS3 and it was already set to linear PCM and PCM on the receiver. I decided to turn up the center channel volume and that seems to have helped a bit.
