Thumbs down Think Before buying any Samsung Player dont get bit like I did

First off I feel it is one of the best things about the internet to find important information to help me make critical decisions. I own a PS3 but wanted a dedicated Blu Ray Player. I decided on the Samsung BD P1500. I read about the issues with the 1400 and thought I was making the right decision and quality.

WRONG COMPLETELY.

First at the place of purchase I was told I was getting 1 year manufacturers warrenty like usual you know so I went ahead and paid $400 plus $50 for an HDMI cable.

Samsung Only gives you 3 months Labor warranty. That is insane.

They are pushing out new firmware revisions constantly patching it so Universal Blu Rays work right and other things I presume. Among the probably 10 firmware updates 2 were bad inferior files. The first one left my 1500 in a state where it wouldnt play some of my DVDs that were working so I was able to revert back by using a USB thumb drive. But a day ago a new revision came out and I was notified. The program worked correctly and shut the unit down as it is supposed to. Then it powered up and was dead.

I called Samsung support in every conceivable manner and was on the phone for 5 hrs. After I was told by one guy that I should not send it back for repair back in its original box and send it in most likely bubble rap and popcorn I new this was just such a rip off. My unit was 6 months old and I new that my only hope was if through retail I could get an exchange.

Fortunately for me I was able to and I got the new Sony BDP S550

Boy did I not no what I was missing. The Picture quality is very much noticeably improved.

So conclusion if you can dont buy Samsung. You will ultimately regret it like me. One of those firmware updates will fail and you will be screwed.

Good Luck

Iam really sorry to here about bad luck with your Samaung.I've heard many stories like yours with Samsung Players.Pick a Samsung thread.

There's also people that have no problems with Samsung,
It's like a flip of a coin if you get a good one or a bad one (while that's what it seems to me).

I wish you better luck with your new player and you never have to experience something like that again

i will never buy a samsung again. My lcd crapped out after 8 months and they refused to service it. Like you i spent hours....days actually on the phone with them and they still refused, i started legal proceedings against them and they eventually gave best buy a replacement code so i could take the piece of junk back, sucky, sucky company when it comes to customer service and backing their warranties

I just have been reading several threads now and have found that Samsung is indeed terrible for so many people. In the future I will just reply to existing Samsung threads but keep in mind: If you think you are safe your not. You ONLY get 3 months warranty.

In the computer industry firmware is also referred to as a Bios Update. Whenever you burn a new firmware revision or Bios unless that file has been tested properly you can get bit and left with a dead piece of hardware. It has nothing to do with the particular player it is the file. Someone in Samsungs IT department uploaded a bad file and the unfortunate people that got it killed their players. This happens out of negligence in IT or intentionally.

What you are supposed to do is what a few days before flashing a new revision to be safe. I unfortunately did not this time. Stupid but in my case it worked out for the best.

the bad thing is that while it was a samsung product this happened to, as much as i hate them, upgrading firmware on any brand of equipment can be potentially dangerous!

whether it be bad coding in the update itself, or if you lose power while updating firmware, things can go wrong with any brand. The one thing we both have in common and can continue to agree on is indeed, how awful Samsung customer service is. they suck!

I have that same Sammy player and yeah it sucks beyond belief. It doesn't play most burned dvd's, it doesn't support avchd discs, its sooooo damn slow, etc, etc, etc! I should have went with the Sony like I started to.

That's terrible I hope you have better luck with your Sony BD Player. This is why I'm glad I bought another PS3 exclusively for a BD player.

I too am stuck with a WORTHLESS Samsung BDP-1000 sitting downstairs in a box collecting.....rats. I wrote a letter to the office of the president of Samsung months ago, but OF COURSE never got a responce! So this being the case.......I only push products by ALL of their competitors from now on at work...............just my way of teaching them!

I owned a Samsung 1000. It had a few issues and I sold it and bought a PS3. The PS3 WAS rock solid. Then I bought a Samsung 1500 as a secondary player. It has been rock solid. Out of about 60-65 or so movies I have put into the Samsung only 2 had issues and both of those were fixed with firmware update 2.1. I paid $140 (brand new) for the player at Amazon after I sold The Ultimate Matrix Blu-Ray set.

@OP, why did you pay $400? Most stores have been selling this player for $300 or less for months, and why in the world would you pay $50 for an HDMI cable? That is crazy.

As for my PS3. It died. I am about 4 months out of warranty and Sony told me I have to pay $149, if they determine that it can be fixed and it was not negligence on my part. I am pissed. I hardly used it at all for games and I was shocked when I read how many 60GB PS3's are having the same problem I am having (YLOD). I am on my way to Costco tomorrow to buy a Panasonic BD player and will get the PS3 fixed and then will dump it on Ebay or Craigslist and get what I can. Sony will not repair my PS3 and send it back (there is not a scratch on it and it looks brand new) but will send me a refurb back with a 90 day limited warranty. After reading about all the other folks that are having YLOD issues with their 60GB PS3's I just do not trust it anymore. I don't want to be stuck paying another $149 for a repair down the road. I have talked to several Sony reps and both of them claimed that they have not heard that my issue was widespread (umm, it is posted all over the Sony forums).

I do agree that Samsung's customer service sucks, but it is no worse than Sony's IMHO (I got burnt about 7 years ago on a high end Sony receiver as well that they never properly fixed even though I sent it to them twice). I am most likely done with Sony for a long time now. Worse case I am out $140 for the Samsung player. I will most likely be out about twice that on my PS3.

Good luck.. I would recommend Panasonic and buy it at Costco or Sams Club since they have a lifetime return policy on DVD and BD players.

I am not a fan of Samsung at all. My friend purchased a DLP TV a few years back and he was left high and dry when it broke a few months into usage.

I've had my Samsung Plasma TV for over a year now and it has been awesome. But my first blu-ray player was the (in)famous BD-P1200. Every now and then I still visit that thread just to remind myself what a great decision I made to stop the insanity and get another player.
