there a pretty good vid of it on youtube.

Can't wait till that technology is perfected.

Video games will be so revolutionized it'll be ridiculous.

Entertainment PERIOD will be revolutionized beyond our wildest imaginations.

Hopefully it'll be perfected in the next 20 years while my eye hand cordination is still good.

It's not a real hologram. It's done through the cameras. There was no 3d image in that studio.

... yes it was . If you watched it the other night, you saw there was actually a round base below the person that was a hologram. I believe it was about 2 feet in diameter (it was round)

Definitely a very interesting technology, looking forward to it being simplified and perfected

You can't project an image into the air yet. Nothing like you saw in the video. Its not possible right now. That base was a marker for wolf to look at so it looked lik he was talking in the right direction.

I think it is a gimmick and does nothing over the usual dual-screen layout when the anchor is talking to a reporter outside.

But then again, what do I know - I thought animated sheets of paper fluttering from one folder to another when you copy a file was also a useless gimmick.

How the CNN Holographic Interview System Works

http://gizmodo.com/5076663/how-the-c...w-system-works

Here are the quotes from guys on Sony Vegas forum:

Quote:
It was lame. A 'true' holographic image would've been displayed on the news set, along with Blitzer. This wasn't. It was superimposed.
Quote:
Got me on that one. I thought Wolf could see her like a hologram. He was probably looking at another monitor "behind her" to make it look like he was talking to someone, or he was just talking to the red dot on the floor.
Quote:
It was green screen with a twist! The twist was the New York studio cameras could truck, pan, tilt, pedestal up and down and the Illinois image was synced to do the same by using multiple cameras. Yes, it is only an effect seen on video, not in the studio by Blitzer.

This was pretty cool to watch, but it is pretty apparent that there is no true hologram there. The in studio people were always standing pretty far away from their "hologram" guests. I agree that the red circle was a reference point for speaking to the "hologram". And the camera was always pulled pretty far back and did some odd pans around the image to make it appear as if it were a 3D image appearing in real space. It's just taking the image of the "hologram" and superimposing it on the broadcast. They even mentioned that the "holo" cameras were synced with the studio cameras, which wouldn't be necessary if it were actually appearing in the studio. Probably not much different that pointing at things on a green screen weather map, although this looked more impressive.

Evidently CNN is unaware of what's been going on in big-budget movies for over a decade, to think they were really doing something so "special"- it's called cgi and special effects! Probably the only thing that was notable was that they made it happen live, as opposed to compiling the shot offline.

That is what made it special though. The fact that the cameras in the holo-tent could match the moves of the in studio cameras to create a fairly realistic image with no real lag in either video or audio is a tremendous feat of technology and programming.

It was a Virtual Studio application, based on a Green Screen, according to what I saw.

Nothing new I am afraid, they just decided to hype their broadcast to people by making it look like Holograms.

I agree! I guess that is why it strikes me as funny that people could actually be getting excited over CNN's "stunt".

To me, it seems CNN clearly was trying to give the impression that they were genuinely projecting a hologram in-studio to make people reference some sort of fond memory from Star Wars. That kind of puts CNN in a disingenuous light, in my eye, since they were either truly clueless of what a non-achievement this was (wrt how they really did it), or they were truly counting on dumb people (evidently amongst their target audience) to actually believe they had figured out how to project holograms. Perhaps they also think when we view their shows with a news anchor speaking to that on-locale reporter seen inside a video display in-studio, this is actually a real person techno-magically shrunk into 2 dimensions to fit inside a flat panel?
