Default New to this.

Little bit about me
Hello, Im a 21 y.o. factory worker. I just signed up and was looking at all of the set ups people here have, I have to say they are nice. But Im new into this home theater thing. I am currently still living with mom and dad and Ill be moving into my own place this spring(renting). Building new walls and all that fun stuff wont be a problem for me, the house is owned by my parents.

The house Im moving into has a full basement unfinished, I have friends from work who also do drywalling so building walls will be no problem and my dad is a industrial electrion at the same place I work at, so wireing will be little issue. I know very little about home audio but I know some terms about audio due to car audio, I know about SPL and SQL. I kinda think SQL will be king in home theaters so, this is one of the areas I will need help in. As Im talking about audio I noticed there isnt much going on with people talking about sound proofing. I was just wondering if people just have bare walls? I will start putting this into cats,

Audio
I am a crazy JL audio fan, because as stated before Car audio, I have had my current car stereo for about 2 years now. I have had no problems with my JL amps and speakers at all. I know JL makes home theater audio things but I was wondering if they are at par with what most people have? Other then that Im not to sure where to go.

I also want to know about audio suppression, It will be in a small house and I live in a area with ALOT of older people. Ive seen some simple ways of this in places like recording studios and that seems a little expesive. I was thinking like the good ol' fashion recycled paper type egg cartons covering the walls with some kinda blanket covering them to make it look nice.

Video This is where my biggest problem is at. Im not sure if I want to have a plasma, LCD, or Projector onto a screen. I just dont dont know what's out there, about all I know is 1080p is best 720p is okay and 480i is just lose. Now that's about all I know about video.

Decore
This is just for good looks. I want to get like movie theater things like a popcorn maker movie posters and all that fun stuff to just give it a movie theater feel. Maybe some small vending mechines to make some money off friends? If you have URL's for these types of places it would help.

Ill inculed the seating into this. For seating Im not 100% sure about the room yet because I dont have a set layout. I know I want atleast 3 single seaters and a couch that can have 3 people on it. My question in this area what is a good ratio to rase the row 1 to row 2 to row 3 kinda thing. Off the top of my head I think the celing is about 6 to 7 foot up. No one is over 6 foot tall but me, so yeah...

Electronic goodies
Just give me a idea where to go for lighting items and remotes. I currently have 2 brand new battery back up systems that can support a decent amount for a computer, But it's no name brand quality to it. I want to find a blue ray player cuz I dont want to use my PS3 for this all the time cuz my sisters like to play rock band .

A good HDMI selector would be nice because I dont want to run 20 million wires around so If I could get this all into a central area and just have a remote controlled hdmi selector with low resistance to prevent losing quality and I would like to have these kinda outta sight or if possible out of the room with the screen and speakers in the room. That kinda brings me to my next little problem climit controll for the electronics, I know they have indoor climit contollers but I only have seen them at work for in door A/C units to keep the computer systems cool on the floor but they can drip water on the floor and at work it's just cement and maybe a few hundred caps.

Current HDMI items
PS3
Xbox 360
Dell Studio 17 laptop (HDMI but Im not sure it's HIGH def.)

Final Thoughts

Ill try to get some pics of the area here soon but I would like to get some input from more seasoned home theater wo/men.

Also this will kinda be a semi budget item. I dont make big bucks but I can make up to 4000 a month but that would make things hard, I would have the money but no time 12 hour night shift.

Also I dont believe I've seen anyone say or post good Items to clean screens and the electronics and things of that sort, maybe someone can do some tests and that stuff?

I assume you will need to get a new receiver for this new theater. Most new receivers will have multiple HDMI inputs and at least 1 HDMI output so a selector will not be needed. Aside from that I am told that JL makes some top shelf stuff. If I were doing a dedicated HT I would go the front projector route as it will be the biggest bang for the buck size wise. If it will be a multi purpose room you may need to look into other display options because light controll is key with front projection. If you do go flat panel display Pioneer and Panasonic make the best plasma displays and Sony and Samsung make the best LCD displays (IMO). It all comes down to budget and how much you are into it. Blu-ray players there are some options. If you get a receiver that will decode all the formats and are looking for a PS3 type budget than the Sony S350 and Panasonic BD35 are great options.

starting with a "shell" you would want to put in plastic conduit to future proof your area.... build a floating wall over that.. and you are ready to begin

as far as JL, buy two sets and send one to me

Definitely a welcome addition to the family.
Welcome to the BluWorldOrder.

Try to broaden your audio knowlege.

Car audio does not equal Home Theater Audio which does not equal Vinyl which does not equal etc etc.

What does that have to do with anything?

Lucy- that may be true but JL audio is currently making some of the best home theater subwoofers (and the most expensive!) in the game. Honestly, no offense to the OP, but I doubt that will be an option due to budget. (I sure as hell couldn't ever afford them!)

My best suggestion is to start off by going to some stores and seeing what's out there, as well as prices. Get an idea of what you're looking for by looking at other people's galleries (which it sounds like you've done). Then, based upon that and your finances, cook up a budget. Come back with that and people will be more than happy to help you spend your money.

I wish I had 10k to spend on my HT...

I say, if you HT is going to be in the basement, get a 1080p projector. The way I see it it's more bang for your buck. Nothing better than 100+ inches of high-def goodness. I'm looking into buying a projector right now and I've seen some pretty good ones under $3,000.

When it comes to A/V receivers, don't stress over wattage. That's the least of your worries. 7.1 is best, but 5.1 is good. Most Blu's are 5.1, but it's nice to have those two extra speakers in the back when you come across a 7.1 film.

For decor, put up movie posters to give your HT that movie theater feel. But, it's up to you.

Most of all, don't rush into buying something. Do your research first. I made that mistake when I bought my first receiver.

I can have it some what small at about 12 x 14 or larger to about 18 x 14 It's just all how many walls I want to put up, I kinda figure a single would have 3 main cement block walls around with one wall really being put up or have the wall pushed back and a cornor wall put up to make it bigger, the only real issue is the main breaker box for the house. I would upload the picture but im getting issues with photo uploading places. I have a few pipes that I can move to the edge of the wall and the only other issue I have is a heating vent that I can just move inbetween the 2x8's. I need to get the walls water sealed better or I could just make a "floating" room.

The "floating" walls will add additional sound protection
both incoming and outgoing
don't need to float the 3 block walls, but I would fur up with 1x2
and put in foam insulation. Sheet rock everything for consistency

IF you really want to go crazy, I have put outdoor carpet on the walls to dampen
never have to paint
but there are better experts here at Blu-ray

I would have to take the walls down every 3-4 years to reseal the block walls because the walls like to "shed" the water proof paint stuff that's spose to be good for 10+ years even I want to move out as soon as I get ride of the 550 dollar truck payment. could be as little as 2 years or as much as 5 much as 4 years and 9 months.

P.S. the 72 month loans will kill you in the long run.

Nice to have you here. Gotta say I'm impressed that you are 21 with high ambition in building your home theater. I'm 23 and I wish I had that much money to spend on home theater stuff. But, I would definitely recommend the 1080p projector with as big of a screen as you can find and many movie posters.

You can go to Ingles. I'm not sure if you have one of those near you or not. But it's a supermarket and they sell their used movie posters they use from the Home Video rental place they have for 99 cents.
