If you do decide to buy a Blu-ray player, expect to spend another $30 for each movie title. It's a tough pill to swallow, let alone afford.
What?

Really, 30$ more?

Do you guys spend 50 dollars for a single movie? Because I spend like an average of 20. Even on the titles I buy at brick-and-mortar, I don't go above even 30.

It's bad enough with some stores charging 35~40, but for an article like this that is supposed to be in favor of it, they're skewing things way too high. All that needs to be said about pricing is that MSRP is generally 40 dollars, but most places sell for MUCH less, sometimes as low as 20 dollars or less. Don't say "get ready to spend 30 dollars more per movie", because that over 2x what people already pay for DVDs. Probably poor wording on their part, but even so, be careful of what you say and how you say it.

I didn't like it.... I thought it came across pretty negative.

Doesn't matter to me I guess... I bought into Blu Ray in Nov 06 so I guess I'm not the person they are writing to.

ps.... Yeah... I didn't like the part about $30 movies... I tend to buy under $20 most of the time. The last few I've bought have been $10 (Crash at Walmart), $12.99 (Weeds seasons 1 and 2), and $14.99 (Terminator, Daredevil) .

I do not see that article as a ringing endorsement of Blu-ray either. If I was a reader that had no clue about the technology I would stay away from Blu-ray. It seems many journalists can not get over the meme that Blu-ray is some aborted format that is not worth buying into.

Fact of the matter is that places like BB still charge up to $34.99 for a single blu-ray. Most naive and uneducated consumers pay these type of prices regardless of how frugal some of you people think you are. Just because you're finding blu-rays at $20 or less doesn't mean that everyone else is too. At least she encourages the reader to look for better deals through different resources before paying the MSRP. Isn't that what most of us do?

I thought it was a fair article. Who are we trying to kid? Prices have gone down over the past year but in reality this is still an expensive hobby to get into. I think it's a fair article especially since it's geared towards people who are new or on the fence in terms of investing into Blu-Ray technology.

Last week, Best Buy had quite a few movies on sale for $12.99 or $14.99. I picked up 4 movies for what was effective $50+tax since I walked away with 2 $5 gift cards. And looking at this week's ad, there's a good selection of movies prices at either $16.99 or $22.99. I'm not trying to defend Best Buy, but it's not that hard to find better prices on Blu-Ray discs.

I would guess she means 30$/title and not (30$+DVD price)/title

the more seems to apply to the player (i.e. buying a BD player and no BDs is useless) on the other hand, like you point out they are not much more then the DVD and let's face it you can always rent.

agree, I also found the initial sentence quite funny

Quote:
With stock values plummeting and your 401K on the brink of becoming a 40K, it's getting increasingly hard to look at next-generation Blu-ray disc players as a sound investment.
with your 401k becoming a 40k doesn't that make BD sound like a better investment (Like the beer and Nortel/Enron... joke in 2002). I know I lost a lot more on my investments then what I spent and enjoyed on BD.

what I find funny is that there has been so much negative and idiotic BS that an article that up-plays the cost and down plays the benefit looks like a pro BD article to some
