Default AMD in a $611m hole during Q1 2007

Wow AMD got hammered in the latest round of financials.

Link

$611m in the red for Q1, not great figures, especially since Intel just wowed the market with forecast beating profits for Q1, can AMD bounce back with Barcelona or will they be crushed by Penryn?

AMD will bounce back. They were destroying Intel big time for how many years?

I think we're finally going to have a nice back and forth slugfest between the two and this only means more innovation and better prices. Good news for us!

What AMD can do is work with Sony/Toshiba/IBM to include a NEW seperate slot for the inclusion of a Cell card, with one or two Cell chips.

I think PCI slots are not fast enough; I don't know about PCI-E.

By having the Cell as an add-on and not as a built-in chip (well maybe the first versions of the AMD motherboard could have that) is so that the Cell processing can be augmented with either a single Cell chip or two or three.

The use of the Cell in PCs would make things interesting. It definitely would help us do AVC encoding or video editing faster. Just a random thought.

Not for AMD, they can't survive another pricewar, the margins are already too low to sustain and the Barcelona chip only matches the QX6700 from Intel so it will be difficult for AMD to dig themselves out of this one.

It was much easier for AMD to bus' a cap in Intel's ass last time because Intel was run by a bunch of penny-pinching/marketing fools after the tech crash of 2001 until 2005 when a proper engineer took over. There are many examples of big companies failing when idiots take over, look at VooDoo, they were doing just fine under the founder who was a real techie, but then the board decided that a marketing guy would better exploit their brand so they installed a marketing whiz. Now the problem is that the marketing guy has little to no understanding of tech goings on so unless he has surrounded himself with the best people the company will lose direction, and VooDoo did. Sony went the same way Idei was a complete idiot when it came electronics, and he was very headstrong and decided to cut the board members to just 11 (mainly so they couldn't majority vote him off, but also because he never took the advice of the board anyway) and Sony failed during his tenure, now that they have got a CEO who has surrounded himself with the best in the business and expanded the board Sony are making money. Point is, Intel back then were a much easier target, now they aren't and AMD will struggle to keep up in both innovation and pricing as Intel can subsidise both a lot more than AMD with cash from other divisions.
