Help connecting to other PS3's - Blu-ray Forum

I live on a military base in Japan, I have a few Japanese friends that live off base. We were trying to play Resistence on-line but when I tried to find their ID's they didn't show up. They have Japanese PS3's I have American. Could that be the reason why we can't connect? Are they on a Japan server while, even though I'm in Japan, I connect to an American one? What can I do to connect to my local national friends?

Currently online play in Resistance is regionised but next month there will be an update to allow worldwide play.
