Default Top Thinking Man's (i.e. Intelligent) Sci-Fi Films

Click here to check out RottenTomatoes.com's ranking of what they consider to be the all-around best "thinking man's" science-fiction movies of years' past and more recently.

Agree? Disagree?

Side Note: One RT user claims there is a difference between something that is sci-fi and something that is science-fiction... uh, how is that, exactly?

Awesome! Children of Men and Dark City are two of my most favorite films.

Good list
I would have put Sunshine on the list but other than that, Blade Runner, Dark City, Children of Men and 2001 are all great choices.

Although certainly not an awful movie I don't personally feel "Sunshine" is ultimately a good film due to a few key factors (with, yes, one of them being the climax) and thus am not surprised that it isn't a contender on the list.

One can certainly do much worse in sci-fi than "Sunshine" though, needless to say.

I agree. I kept hearing great things about Sunshine, and after seeing it, felt it was only slightly above average, at best. I don't regret watching it, but I wouldn't consider it one of the best.

I also agree with the guy a few posts above, wondering why 12 Monkeys didn't make the cut.

Haven't seen Sleeper (not a Woody Allen fan) or Primer but I like the rest of the ones they listed. Except for those 2 and Solaris, they're available on blu-ray also. Like that they're using the blu-ray covers for some of the movies listed.

I feel Rotten Tomatoes is a bit overrated. I think its held in too high regard to some people. The Matrix should def be on there and I know they've got a thing against it and the trilogy for that matter, or so it seems. Also 12 monkeys should be a given.

Sleeper is one of my favorite Woody Allen movies if not THE favorite and I'm not a huge fan either. it's quirky and smart

Good list. I might have to give "Primer" a rental, because I have never seen it. I watch Children of Men, but I had to amny distractions...will give it another chance when it is released in Blu-ray. Soylent Green and Logan's Run should be included. BUT how in the world did they not include The Matrix?

I wish all the reviewers did a list so we could compare and what not.

not a bad list, but like others I think there are some missing (logan's run, the day the earth stood still) and some I would not include (sleeper)

It probably didn't help that I'd recently rewatched 2001:ASO for the who-knows-how-many'th time, a few days before watching Sunshine.

This isn't sci-fi related, but... stay away from The Wrestler then.

i actually want to see that. i love marissa tomei and i really dig the director. i'm sure it will be sad and all, but i think that it will still be good. to me children of men was a) too, too depressing and b) too slow moving for me.

not at all. i actually don't always like hollywood happy endings. i think a realistic ending sometimes ends up being better. but a movie doesn't have to be so depressing that you want to go home, curl up in bed, and forget about life altogther. to be full on depressed about life after leaving a movie isn't fun for me. i've got plenty to be depressed about. i don't need a movie to get me more depressed.

hurm....whats the point of that movie....if somebody who doesn't have as much power is being a punk and is a threat to more "civilized" societies, the higher society has the right to take them out
but that can be done with any movie

hurm....whats the point of 2001.... guy goes into space and computer goes nuts and shoots him out

hurm....whats the point of CETK.... aliens come down, people see them and then they leave

it was not a despot coming to tell earth what to do, it was a warning (which is why he came and wanted to talk to all nations) that the way we are behaving (arms race and itchy triger fingers) we would annihilate ourselves and we need to start working together

decent list, glad to see Solaris on it.

There is no functional difference between the two. High Brows prefer Science Fiction. It's like Trekkers/Trekkies. There's no functional difference between the two groups, one group just feels superior to the other. Doesn't change the fact that they're all nerds.

I really loved Minority Report and it's one of my favorite sci-fi flicks, even though I don't expect to see it on there. I wonder when it's coming to blu?

I think that's awesome that Children of Men made the list. Truly a great movie.

I must add to the previous posters that Sunshine is one of my favorite sci-fi's as well.
