Thumbs down shipping worries

I just found out that my new plasma that I am getting from j&r is going to be "opened" before I receive it.I was told not to worry that it is new and factory fresh. The reason for opening it was to add extra packing for shipping. This worries me because how do I know it is really "new"...anyone ever had this happen?...worried they might scratch it by putting in additional packing.

I would be more worried about it being a refurb or just used instead of a scratch being put on it. The only thing I have purchased from them are my Polk RM 6750's that I won't get until Monday. Maybe someone on here has purchased a television from them.

From what Ive heard from the local radio shop guys in my little town is that somewhere in/on the electronic it has to state it was refurbed, if you have a local electrical store that does repairs or anything ask them if there are ways of telling that if something is refurbed or used, they might ask you if you have used it. Ive been told the light bulb in some HDTV's is the thing that gives it away. But that's what Ive heard, so don't take my word for it.

Default J&r

Though I haven't bought a TV from J&R...I have bought my last 2 receivers and JBL speakers from them and I was very pleased with their service! I'd buy from them again.

Thats odd, my Panasonic came in its own box. That box was already padded and very sturdy. I think most big items are styrofoamed well enough as to handle the freight shipping.

did you get your set from j&r??...I agree with you...if it can make it from the factory to them in it's own box then it should make it from ny to wv..

maybe they have had an incident recently that has forced them to change their shipping procedures?? maybe they were having too many tv's returned due to damage caused by shipping?

i bet a phone call to them to ask why they are doing this will solve the problem, just tell them your concerns and i am sure they will tell you.

it would be more than their moneys worth to rip their consumers off by send them a refurb unit when purchased as new...lawsuit anyone? if it is a refurb, by law there has to be a re manufactured sticker on it, so have a close look around the unit

I am sure though they are just taking extra precaution with the shipping. After all i am sure it costs them a small fortune to keep forking out the return shipping fee for every tv they have to have shipped back to them because it was damaged in transit

Just inspect it thuroughly. They are a pretty reputable outfit. You might want to search the net for the code to the service menu and then check the number of hours on the set as soon as you get it. If >0, they sold you a refurbed unit.

I've had two Pannys delivered with smashed inner screeens. An 800u to me and an 80u to my in-laws. One was purchased directly from Panasonic and the other was purchased by a locally owned electronics store in two different states.

Maybe they are just being caucious...my dealer in roanoke said they received two 9 grand pioneers and the boxes looked fine. They signed for them and both had busted screens...I guess all i can do is wait till it gets here and check it over for scrathes or other damage.

That's exactly what happened to me. The box looked perfect but the screens was toast.

The local company opened today before they bring it out on Monday. Everything supposedly looked good. I guess we'll wait and see.

That is very odd for them to be doing that. It would take a hefty blow to make contact with the screen itself inside the box. There is like 6" of space on the front and rear of the screen.

Also, forgot to mention this - the box has 4 plastic handles on it. They basically swing out to unlock them and you can pull each one out. Then the top of the box lifts up revealing the tv. The bottom part of the box is only 10" high if that.

So, the box is never really "sealed" per say.
