Default Doctor Who: Peter Davison Complete First Season (Season 19) Now Season 2 too (S 20)

Doctor Who: Peter Davison Complete First Season Blu-ray

Doctor Who: Peter Davison - Complete Season Two Blu-ray April 2, 2024

BBC Studios has announced Doctor Who Season 19 as the next release in the Doctor Who: The Collection range. Peter Davison’s first series as the Fifth Doctor follows the success of Tom Baker’s first season on Blu-ray and will be released on the November 19, 2018. This collector’s edition also has a limited run.

Pre-order Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 19 from August 22, 2018.

Peter Davison joined the long running BBC series in 1981, replacing Tom Baker as the Doctor. His first season bursts with the fresh energy and breathless excitement that would come to define his era. Across seven classic adventures, the Doctor and his companions Tegan, Nyssa and Adric face off against The Master, the terrifying Mara, the Terileptils, the Plasmatons, Monarch and the revamped Cybermen, making a triumphant return to the series in one of the programme’s all-time classics.
The limited edition Blu-ray includes brand new special features exclusive to this set:

Five new ‘Making-Of’ documentaries for Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Black Orchid, Earthshock and Time-Flight
Surround sound mixes for Kinda and Earthshock
An extended version of Black Orchid Part One
Rare studio footage from Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Earthshock and Time-Flight
Updated special effects for Castrovalva
Seven more editions of Behind The Sofa
A newly-shot one-hour interview ‘Peter Davison In Conversation with Matthew Sweet’
And much more!

Plus the following stories from 1982:

Castrovalva (Four episodes)
Four To Doomsday (Four Episodes)
Kinda (Four Episodes)
The Visitation (Four Episodes)
Black Orchid (Two Episodes)
Earthshock (Four Episodes)
Time-Flight (Four episodes)

The eight-disc box set also includes the Peter Davison/David Tennant mini-episode Time Crash, plus hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

All 26 episodes have been remastered from scratch by Peter Crocker and Mark Ayres. With the original 16mm film elements still in existence, the location material is presented in true HD, with studio material upscaled. Lee Binding has again provided stunning packaging design and Pete McTighe has written extensive booklet notes and is the content consultant for the title. Doctor Who: The Collection is executively produced for BBC Studios by Russell Minton.

Oh, man. I hope this will till be available by January or February, and that they re-print S12 in this type of packaging.

That's the limited British packaging, which S12 also had.

Do you think they will ever do a "super duper mega" box set containing every single season of all the Doctors up to the newest one?

I don't even want to think about the MSRP of such a thing, especially considering how expensive each individual season is.

On that note, why is Doctor Who so much more pricey than other TV shows on Blu? Can't be a BBC thing, Sherlock is reasonably priced.

Why not finish Tom Baker's run first. Or do Jon Pertwee's first couple of episodes. I am sorry but the Davidson Doctor number 5 is the boring doctor.

I know. I was just saying that I wanted them like that. If they re-release S12 again like the US version (normal case), then I will only get these like that and avoid the Limited UK Versions since I want to collect them in the same type.

For only 3 episodes per season, I think Sherlock is priced too high.

Counterpoint - Five is awesome!

. . . and that's why jumping around doctor to doctor is the best way to go. Someone somewhere will always have a favorite Doctor that you cant stand, or that hates your Doctor. Three years of Tom (assuming one season every 6 months) is unfair to those who love Pat or Bill. Starting from the beginning (missing episodes not withstanding) and moving foward is unfair to someone who loves Seven.

Be thankful that you're getting season releases instead of a single story every two to three months.

That doesn't really makes sense though. They aren't going to get everyone to buy every set no matter what order they release them. They need strong early sales now, especially after a botched season 12 release. Season 13 would guarantee more strong sales.

Many have the season 12 set now and are in the mood for more Tom Baker. I don't want to switch around back-and-forth between different doctors. I want to start with a Doctor and stick with his run until finished, not jump from series to series with different companions. And it's a bad idea for new fans who may be coming to this from the new series, wanting to check out the classics. They will feel lost being shuffled around randomly from doctor to doctor. These old shows do pick up new fans. This is a confusing way to introduce new fans to the classics.

It's how they've done it from the beginning of the home video range. Apparently, there are (or at least were) a lot of Tom Baker fans that will casually pick up a title of another doctor, here or there, while they wait for more Tom releases. Tom is the biggest seller of the "classic" range, so they don't want to blow their entire wad too early.

If it were up to me, I would've started with the first complete season and released them all in order and then gone back to the earlier seasons (to give maximum time for missing episode recoveries). Also, if it were up to me, I would've started releasing season sets on Blu-ray at least 5 years ago.

Clearly, it is not up to me.

But back then they were doing it one story at a time and that factored heavily into their release schedule - they released stories they thought would sell well to help fund the next one.

Most of that work is done now, so they don't have to start from scratch and do each story over. So since they're releasing full seasons, and the vast majority of the work is done, it makes sense to me to just pick a doctor and go through his entire series before moving to the next doctor. And the obvious choice due to popularity is Tom Baker.

I get why they picked him to start with. What I don't get is why they're jumping around. What other series ever has been released like this? Again, back then it's how they did it, one story at a time. Now with full season sets, it makes no sense.

The restoration team says it will take around 8-9 years to finish the whole line, at around 3 sets per year. So I have to possibly wait up to 8-9 years to get the last Tom Baker series, depending on how they choose to release them? Sorry, but that makes no sense to me. Pick a doctor and stick with him.

As Strax once said in a hard-to-find field report:

“The Fifth Doctor showed some grasp of the military virtue of camouflage, by having no distinguishing features whatsoever”

As has already been pointed out, it makes perfect sense. Not everyone is a fan of every Doctor, this way everyone will have their favourites represented sooner rather than later. You having to wait 8-9 years (I doubt it, anyway) to get the last Tom makes more sense than a 7th Doctor fan having to wait that long to get so much as one season of him released.

It makes sense to have some variety - something for everyone. The stuff you have no interest in...you can skip.

This looks to be a better set than S12. As much as I love Tom's first season, S19 here has greater variety in storytelling which makes for a more compelling set overall, I'd say.

I'll totally pick it up, but I've yet to get S12 due to all the disc issues. Hopefully they're all ironed out by the time this releases.
