Default The Keep

I read this movie might be released soon in Blu Ray. Anybody know anything about this? This classic needs to be remastered and released in Blu Ray Directors Cut. Way over due.

Never seen The Keep due to it's unavailability on DVD/Blu. Hope it gets released soon, even if it's just a bare-bones DVD.

I did read the novel (by F. Paul Wilson) about 20+ years ago, and enjoyed it. Good horror story set during WW II...

It's available to stream on Amazon, not the best quality though but you're unlikely to find anything better at the moment (unless you happen to find the laserdisc). It's also free for those with Prime, I just tried it out because it had been awhile since I've seen it.

My exposure to this film was thru a bootleg DVD I purchased from defunct online retailer Flesh Wound Video. Quality wasn't great but it was still watchable. I don't know if I want a legitimate release but if it never materializes I won't lose any sleep.

Someone made a post on AV Maniacs yesterday that said this: "It seems that Paramount is currently working on an HD master of this film..." I discounted this since it was April Fool's Day, but on the off chance it was true, I emailed the guy to ask him if he was being serious, or pulling a prank.

Here's what he told me: "No it isn't a joke, a FaceBook friend of mine who is working for dvd companies posted last week on his FB wall the news that Paramount has a new HD master for the film, so i guess that this year a dvd or Blu Ray will be released."

And yes, they are talking about "The Keep"

I'm getting all tingly. Although I might have deep-vein-thrombosis ...

The Keep should be preserved. As an example of a studio cutting so much from a film that it makes no sense. Characters do and say things without any precedent. Although after the first few cuts they've created their own precedent! It's like non-sequitur-surrealist-film-breaking at it's finest!

It's so awful! I absolutely loved the book and the movie was an abomination to me. It boggles my mind how bad the movie turned out considering the talent working both behind and in front of the cameras. The only reason I was able to follow what was going on was that I filled in stuff that happened in the book. You're right that the film makes no sense. I've mentioned it before but the only thing I liked was the soundtrack by Tangerine Dream.

That's not credible. Credible is:

John Somethingsomething from CBS Paramount stated on Twitter today that the original six Star Trek films will be getting remasters for blu-ray in late 2014.

Not:

My best friend's sister's cousin who does the night cleaning for the same law offices that represented William Shatner in a 1976 lawsuit over who wore the best tuxedo at the Oscars that year found a sticky note that said "New Trek" on it the garbage can of a Dairy Queen three blocks away from the administrative offices of Paramount Home Video.

It was the same for me. I think everyone would love a more balanced version of the film and not the highlight reel we had.

The only way to currently watch this film in half decent quality and in widescreen is if you have the rare Laserdisc.

So a remastered Blu-Ray or even DVD is long overdue.

Not sure if it still is there but it was on Netflix at one point (and in HD) That's where I saw it. It was also airing on Epix HD fairly recently. I know that channel isn't available everywhere but much of the stuff from Epix is also on Netflix.

It is still on Netflix and it looks good, too. I feel like the consensus is that Mann has kept this film from DVD/blu-ray because he hates it. Maybe he would get on board if it was released uncut, but who knows. I'm not holding my breath.

Maybe the reason Mann hates the film is because of all the cuts and tampering. He's a director with enough clout - couldn't he just insist on reworking the film? At the very least if he gets to reissue the film the way he wants it, it would finally get fans off his back.

Indeed. That was my poorly worded implication. The only problem is, he has to want to do it. And a lot of directors, even if they like the idea (which Mann may or may not), still have to find the time and prioritize it over their other projects and personal life. Dare to dream.
