I have always use regular speaker wire, mainly because I have some much. The house has yet to burn down, so I say it's find.

PS: This is on my parents Home Theatre Setup. Toshiba 65" DLP 1080p. Old Yamaha 5.1 System, with 5-Disk DVD player. No Blu-Ray, they feel it's a rip.

I have standard speaker wire running... no issues.. just make sure you don't rip the padding under the carpet while running wires.. i learned that the hard way

Use flat speaker wires.

Do a search. You may be able to get better prices. Home Depot also has flat speaker wire.

+1...That's what I just installed a few days ago. They have a lower profile, so there is no issue with traffic (use mine under an area rug).

place we are at is a rental. The landlords deceided to replace the living room carpet, so when the installer came, I asked him about running my rear wires under the carpet. He was very cool, and even cut a path in the pad so there is no bump in the carpet at all. Guess the next tenents will be all set with 16 gauge Monster for their setup, or I could just cut them when I move to screw them over!!!

Another choice is to run the speaker wires under the baseboards, which are usually mounted a half inch or more above the floor to allow carpeting to be tucked under.
There is usually a good sized space for wires under the baseboard and behind the "tackless" strips that hold the carpet in plsce.
