I think because of how their contracts are for the films criterion releases they have to region code them because of legal reasons on their distribution requirements as agreed to when they acquired the rights of the films.

I would hope they would go back to the companys and re negotiate their terms to say hey things have changed ... and try to fix the issue.

I don't think Criterion would want to choose to make it harder for overseas fans to buy titles. I would think anyone would like to make a sale where ever.

on a different note I think so far all of the BFI British releases are Region locked also.

It is beacuse they don't own the films just licensed to sell them in the US and I think Canada depending. So other companies own the rights of distribution in other markets - again depending.

I would guess some companies like Studio Canal would rather be contracted by others to sell overseas etc.

This was always expected. They only have rights for these in some regions.

It's the same situation as DVD. Criterion region codes only when contractually obligated to do so.

The original release of The Third Man was region 0. Then the remastered version which came out was locked Region 1. Criterion is locking the BD just as it did with new DVD.

It is the same with The Wages of Fear. Original release free, new release locked. Therefor the BD which was announced should also be locked.

Maybe its been Criterion's practice to lock their recent releases? I would have to look further into there last 100 releases but so far it seems like it.

Or they had to renogotiate rights since then. Why would Criterion lock otherwise? They'd only be hurting themselves.

I typed up this list of titles currently apart of the collection that are region free. I did this so you can be aware of what possible titles will be available for those wishing to import. You can expect these titles to remain region free when they are brought to BD, however don't be surprised if the region coding is altered once Criterion's contract runs out with whomever the title is licensed from.

I decided to keep titles separate even if they are only available in box sets and also included out of print titles because we never know when they will be back in print. (Back in print = New contract)

I keep hearing complaints about a few movies beeing released in Europe before the US.. Heres a great example of how things work the other way around! Maybe years in the future these will be realeased as a bare-bones release in a fatcase.. Just saying, you probably have twice as many releases in the US as us in Europe so no need for complaints when we get Se7en before you
