Default Play TV, how much will the 120gb Slim hold?

With the good lady wife about to drop the change for a Slim i was wondering how much TV we could store on the 120GB drive? Its only going to be used to store that and anything game related as the rest of my stuff will be on a NAS.

Probably around 90 hours (based on old Tivo numbers) or so PLUS about 20GB extra for game storage.

Sadly PlayTV uses MPEG2 based compression rather than MPEG4/AVC, so it means it eats space like nobodies business.

any idea of numbers though? If its a tiny amount then i'll just drop a big drive in off the bat and flog the 120.

Drop a 500GB HDD in it and be done. There is no need for numbers. There is no such thing as too much space.

a valid point particularly well made.

The only problem now is that i have a bit of a problem not being able to control myself when i start buying computer components dont even need and upgrade but everything is so cheap now!

Yeah, but the PS3 is more than powerful enough to encode on the fly to AVC.

Since i dont need it for anything other than games and TV i am going to wait a little.

the 4 games i have (LBP, MGS4, Grid & Uncharted) dont used locked saves as far as i am aware so im going to see if anyone starts churning out bigger 9.5mm drives. 500gb is nice but 1tb is nicer :P

Inside PlayTV only and there'd be a small quality loss.

Well PlayTV is just a USB tuner, the PS3 does all of the heavy lifting in terms of decoding and whatnot. PlayTV sends the PS3 a compressed MPEG2 signal which the PS3 decodes and puts on the screen, there is however enough available power to recode on the fly or decode and encode if you wanted to avoid the quality loss.

would it be able to do that and play an intensive game at the same time? i dont know how much grunt it would need but one of the bonuses of PlayTV is that you can keep doing what you are doing and it just poodles along in the background.
