Default New to Blu-ray

Hey Everyone.

I just wanted to say HELLO to everyone. I am new to the site and want to introduce myself.

For christmas this year I got an Insignia NS-2BRDVD Blu-ray player. This is my first step into upgrading my home theater. I also have a 42" HD Toshiba Theaterview. Which I will be replacing with some kind of 1080P TV. My old DVD Player is an Sony DVP-CX860 301-Disc DVD Player, which I am thinking about selling. My sound system is a Yamaha HTR-5240.

I have 300 Titles on DVD, which I guess its time to replace. I have just replaced 4 to blu-ray. 300, Batman Beings, Dark Knight, Ironman, and I am Legend.

My question is... What are some of the MOST HAVE Blu-ray???

The Godfather Trilogy. It's not like some of the older films on blu-ray where they barely did anything. They took the first 2 movies and redid each scene and a sound is better. The Tommy Guns scene with Sonny in the first one.

I agree with posts suggesting Band of Brothers. I have yet to purchase that title, but it has gotten rave reviews. Here are a few that I own which I would suggest and why:

Beowulf
Wall E
Kung Fu Panda (these titles have top tier audio and video and have good stories, but be aware that they are animated titles so you need to have a taste for that kind of movie)

Lucky # Slevin (not expensive, but a great story and good rewatchability)
Planet Earth (superb documentary)
Pan's Labryinth (suberb plot, but be aware that it is in Spanish with English subtitles)

Firefly (I see you have Serenity among your DVD collection, this is the series that preceded the film)

Band of Brothers is a MUST for me. I have it on DVD.
Beowulf was really cool in the theaters, so I may have to rent it first.
Wall E is on my Netflix que right now.
Kung Fu Panda, I love Jack Black, so I may just pick this up instead of renting it.
Lucky # Slevin, Love it. Its a must for my blu ray collection.
Planet Earth, I may rent this one. I dont see myself rewatching it.
I loved Firefly and Serenity, they are most for my collect.

there's no point in trying to replace all of your DVDs with Blu-ray

i am not buying any BDs that I already own in DVD form, it took me 1 year to get all the Star Wars DVDs, thats enough, im happy with them in DVD and i will focus my BD collection on upcoming movies (and the entire James Bond collection)

Speak for yourself! I'm upgrading just about everything in my collection.

Anyway- OP you can see the site's most popular movies here. You can also adjust in your preferences for just your region, country, etc.

I'm just thinking of buying my first Blu-ray, but I don't know if all my old DVDs will work in the new Blu-ray? Is it worth the change?

standard dvd's will definitely work in a blu ray player, just not the other way around, and it is DEFINITELY worth the change, be careful though, as a lot of people on this site can tell you, getting into bly ray can be a tad addicting

kind of what i am doing as well, i am keeping all my old dvd's for the moment and saving my blu ray purchases for new releases and movies i dont own yet, but want to, as i slowly replace the dvd's when there is a good sale on somewhere
