Default Need help deciding on a sub

I just upgraded my HT sound system (see signature). I love the Mirage speakers, but I'm not totally sold on the sub. I prefer a tight sub, something that you feel inside your chest, but not boomey.

I've been looking at a Definitive Technologies Supercube I, but have also been reading about the Elemental Designs subs.

My room is rather large; about 25x20 with vaulted ceiling. Again, I like a nice tight base.

For the ED, I'm looking at the A2-300, A3-300, and the A5-350.

I'm looking to spend up to $750. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Subwoofer Manufacturers: A Complete List. This link has the majority of home subwoofer manufacturers listed.

Also look at the offerings from Hsu Research, Martin Logan, Axiom, AV123, Earthquake, Cadence, Epik, Pinnacle, Aperion, etc., etc., etc. You can't go wrong with any of the mentioned subwoofers.

Are dual A2-300's out of the question?

In that price range, the AV123 MFW-15 is hard to beat.

Oh geez. With that price? The Av123 MFW-15 is your BEST choice. Bar none, but this is just JJs opinion.

Nothing about two of them though.

True, but the real question would be is it comparable to dual A2-300's in a large room? Rather, would one "best" sub be as good as two "better" subs. (As in good, better, best)

True. You can feel the low frequecies from one A2-300 outside of my house, I would hate to see what two could do.

I have a large living room as well, around 15x25, and I wouldn't want anymore territory taken up myself. One sub is big enough for the space, especially the AV123 and the eD...

In that price range you can afford this bad boy:

http://www.monitoraudiousa.com/produ...duct=17&area=2

Dual EQ's, one for music, one that gives you a 4 db "boost" for explosions etc during home theater use.

I demo'd it for a guy from work, he almost wet his pants.

Best part of it is it has a very small footprint - 13 3/8 x 13 3/8 x 15 5/8 inch

Two medium size subwoofers is better than one very large subwoofer. Using two subs is not about more SPL and shaking up the neighborhood, but rather it is about evening the effect of standing waves and more uniform bass across the room.

Well the SuperCubes are Awesome... My dad has the Supercube II and it still amazes me. However, if I had your budget, I would be going the Hsu route and would probably get this guy

True BigDaddy, but by adding a second woofer you are definitely going to add DBs right?

Again, the AV123 is one of the best in the market at its price range. If the wife will let you drag in two eDs, go for it...

^^^True, but more DBs will be output right?
Yes and no. Initially, you will get more DB, but once you calibrate your audio, the DB level from the subs should be the same. However, it will be more even across the room. With one sub, you can get the same DB level. However, it will be useful for only one person. Two or four subs give great bass response across the room for multiple seating positions.

Instead of two EDs, perhaps two gentler subwoofers that have greater WAF.

Not to stir the pot but those "rankings" you posted are 2 years old. And as for the 2 medium subs over 1 large I disagree, 1 GOOD sub with controlled, detailed low freq over 2 subs or 1 large.

Contrary to popular belief all low freq is not created equal.

Errr, I BEG to differ, (points to his own sub)

But, lol, imagine explaining to your wife why you bought a new Hummer and parked it next to the couch. Then imagine explaining a pair!

I still think those "rankings" I posted stand pretty firm. There might be somthing close, but I doubt in that price range.

JJ,

Get a wife, and then point to your sub, and then see what she says...

Trust me, all subs are too big for a wife.
