Default More FUD...HD DVD Movie Sales Only 2K Behind Blu-ray

I found this article on IGN...

Quote:
HD-DVD Movie Sales Only 2k Behind Blu-ray
Most recent sales data shows formats almost neck and neck.
by Gerry Block

April 25, 2007 - The recent pres-release-bickering between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps isn't terribly new, though most previous spats have gone down in the midst of large trade shows. The most recent squabbling began when HD-DVD celebrated the format's birthday by announcing that 100,000 dedicated players had been sold, preserving the format's hardware lead, not counting the PlayStation 3 (story). Blu-ray fired back, announcing that Blu-ray movie sales had reached the 1,000,000-sold milestone, and added a little salt to the wound with the data that 70-percent of Q1 HD-movie sales were thanks to Blu-ray (story).

Today, HD-DVD's representatives from Webersh & Wick public relations wrote to IGN Gear directly with updated HD-DVD news. According to their figures, HD-DVD movie sales lag only 2,000 units behind Blu-ray with 998,059 units sold. The firm points out that pre-orders of Planet Earth and The Matrix Trilogy will propel HD-DVD over the million-mark quite shortly. Representatives also stated that hardware sales have continued with strength in April, maintaining a 4 to 1 margin over Blu-ray.
Obviously, they didn't know it was over 1.2 million BD sold at the time. Plus, I guess they don't count PS3s and PC drives as "hardware".

This is very poor spin if you ask me.

At least the article states that they don't count the PS3, which has more hardware capabilities than all their players, and not just because the disc it reads is better.

Not counting the PS3 and counting pre-orders, which BDA has NOT done, just shows the world how desperate HD-DVD is. BD would be even more out of reach if pre-orders were counted.

'Gerry Block' clearly didn't do his research. HD-DVD reps are so much more trustworthy than Nielson Videoscan sales data.

It's exactly what happened w/ the Wal-mart HD-DVD deal.

Like I said, at least they note that HD-DVD doesn't count the PS3 as hardware.

Maybe anyone reporting on this will mention the contradiction of it with Nielson numbers.

Outright flase facts from Toshiba, that's real smooth of them.

It's funny: they keep trying to ignore the PS3 as a working player in press statements, but at their board meetings they've gotta know that it's a very real product that's putting BD leagues ahead in disc sales.

I feel sorry for those who buy HD-DVD players after being conned by these slick press releases. No wonder they can get so rabid when you show them something truthful.

HD DVD must be proud of the fact that they had a significant head start, and a "4:1" stand-alone hardware advantage, and still got their asses kicked by Blu-ray.

I don't even believe that 4:1 hardware number is correct. There was a report done a couple months back that stated standalone player sales were almost even (52% HD DVD and 48% Blu-ray). Even if you threw in HD DVD add-ons, the number shouldn't be 4:1. Where are these people getting their numbers?

By Golly! I didn't know they had sold 13 million HD DVD players by now! That's it! I'm selling my PS3 AGAIN, and also my Laserdisc player this time. And my S-VHS. And mmm.. my toaster.

They had this in the works for a while. They just used the old argument, "If I tell myself this enough times it will be true."

They probably count the LG combo for HD-DVD sales, but don't count if for BD sales. Also, the Sony BD player is $999.99 when it came out, so how could you possibly count that as a standalone?!

Also, I hope they realize that the 20gb PS3 cost the same as their POS HD-A2, which cannot do 1080p and doesn't have HDMI 1.3.

You know, even the fact that they don't count the PS3 works against them. If they don't count that, then they can only calculate the attach rate for BD discs for the standalone players, which means that the attachment rate for BD is through the roof compared to HD-DVD.

That's too bad if they're spreading FUD. Usually I read Gerry's feature on HDTV's at IGN. Got some good info there (usually).

This goes beyond FUD. It's downright delusional. Same thing for the whole 3 million players by end of year. Absurd.

Hilarious. They take a snap shot at the point BD is racing past and declare them neck and neck.

I feel I'm being drowned in a sea of propaganda. It's coming from everywhere. I guess it shows just how desperate the situation is for HD DVD right now.

..

Microsofts FUD campaign o'l so hard at work.....
they are giveing it one more go .... but i think even with MICROSOFT'S resources..they are going to have to offer a blu-ray option for their system..soon enough an when that happens...that will be a shure fire sign of HD-DVD's death....
