Default is the market on crazy pills?

Why are they marketing/selling recorders prior to readers (BD-ROM drives)?

I really dont give a crap about burning to Blu-ray, but when DVD first came out, Creative Labs came out with a DVD drive, with it's own decoder card for $200 (back in 1998). So may I ask why haven't we seen ANY BD-ROM drives?

There are some, you just have to search more. I think LG had ... (not sure).

Why would you want a ROM only drive? You can get a burner and never use it to burn and there you have it ROM (i dont think it will be much more expensive).

not sure if i buy that, i mean, not to say any of you have been mislead and/or lying, but come on, $600-800 for a read only drive? MS sells one for the xbox 360 (HD DVD) $200 as an addon, so i know the cost of hardware doesn't exceed that (at least).

I'm just going by what's done in the past

CD-ROM > CD Burner
DVD-ROM > DVD-ROM CD Burner Combo > DVD-Burner

BD-burner > !?!?! It just appears to be sort of a catch 22 to have a burner out.

Well, burner drives can play the discs as well, so why not just make the leap?

Ive read on avs that the difference from a BD ROM and a BD-R Burner is 10 cents to make, and that is why they're all burners.

At the CES this year Pioner announced such a unit. BD-ROM, DVD & CD burn and play. I can't remember the expected release date but before June I think.

If BLU-RAY burners were so cheap to make then every standalone BLU-RAY player and PS3 machine should have a burner. I totally agree with domerdel. So far no company has released a BD-ROM drive that reads only BD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and CD-ROM but does no writing. Such a read only drive should easily be made for $200-$300. My first DVD player was back around 1998 and it was a DVD-ROM drive which was one year after the format was released. Later on I also purchased a combo Pioneer Elite Laserdisc/DVD player but the DVD-ROM drive in my computer was my first taste of the DVD quality. Standalone DVD players were selling for over $1,000 but one could purchase a DVD-ROM drive with MPEG-2 decoder card between $349-$449 dollars. If the BLU-RAY camp was smart they would release BD-ROM read only drives. There is a demand for people to play HDTV movies on their computer and in the future play computer Blu-ray games. BD-ROM drives for $200-$300 would be popular for computers just like the BD-ROM read only drives are popular with the over 6 million PS3 machines that have shipped.
I would purchase a BD-ROM read only drive for around $300 and later on buy a BD-ROM recorder for a second slot in my computer for $700.

i can see were your coming from but do you know the price difference between a blu-ray burner and just a reader? i would image at maximum of 100$ difference plus with this new gen to relay get your money for you need a monitor capable of 1080p which very few are, plus you need that monitor to be hdcp which even less are. it is estimated that the blu-ray drive in the ps3 costs around 130$ wears a hd dvd one costs around 80$ but those are read only drives. i also suspect as you might that there is alot of money being pushed around to keep blu-ray prices up. also sony has said that toshiba is probly losing money on hd dvd players(might be true might not)also by only making blu-ray burners it highers the demeaned(possible) for blu-ray media also it is suspected that the price of some of the most pricey parts of blu-ray drives is due to almost decrees in half(due to ps3) also it is roumerd that the royalties for blu-ray drives is around 30$

Thumbs up for Pioneer. I have 4 BD drives and I would like to upgrade the rest of my optical drives to BD.
