The Hobbit to start filming in 2010

370 days of filming? It really sounds like The Hobbit is in good hands. It's scheduled to hit theaters Dec of 2011

As part of a promotion for the new Hellboy II Blu-Ray, Guillermo del Toro participated in an online chat with fans last weekend. As always, del Toro usually provides some minor updates on The Hobbit during chats like this, and he revealed a few details actually worth mentioning. Thanks to BilboHobbit.com for providing the transcript of the chat. Most importantly, del Toro says that filming will begin in 2010 and that The Hobbit (to eventually be split into two films) will shoot for 370 days. Considering a typical film shoot is usually only a few months, that's a shocking number, but certainly necessary for this adaptation.

Gullermo also said that he's hoping to work with the following past collaborators: Hellboy comic book author Mike Mignola during the "design stage for a week or two", concept artist Wayne Barlowe, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro of all of del Toro's previous films, and special effects house Spectral Motion. None of this is official, but he's hopeful they will all join. Most of these people have worked with Guillermo before on everything from Pan's Labyrinth to Hellboy II, which will make them a perfect addition to The Hobbit team on top of everyone from the Lord of the Rings films.

As for the special effects and creatures, del Toro mentioned that they're really focusing on the Goblin Kingdom, the dragon Smaug, and the Spiders of Mirkwood in regards to creature design. "We will be pushing them to the edge of technology where we will fuse animatronics and CGI into a seamless new art form in creating creatures." While Hellboy II had a lot of recognizable puppets, del Toro says that The Hobbit will feature more of a seamless mix. "You will see some mind-boggling mixture of CGI / puppetry like never before. The demarcation of where one technique ends and the other begins will NOT be as clean as in HBII or Blade II or Pan's Labyrinth. I am going to push further than ever on both fronts."

It's always a huge relief to hear from Guillermo del Toro, because every time he talks about The Hobbit, I gain even more confidence in him. To be honest, I was worried after Hellboy II that he might not be able to still pull it off, but it sounds like Peter Jackson is making sure they're doing it exactly right. "The challenge is to create and expand a massive universe and be as immersive as the [Lord of the Rings] trilogy was. To approach Tolkien's book with the right mixture of reverence, enthusiasm and invention."

WOW!!!! that is a lot of days. I cannot wait to see this movie, and nice timing, coming out on the 10th anniversary of the release of The Fellowship Of The Ring.

That's an insane number of days. The entire Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in only 274 days. The Hobbit, which will be 2 films, will take 96 more days than that?

Dec 2011 seems so far away.

There is suppose to be two films, but I believe they don't have filming rights to anything other than The Hobbit and the Trilogy. Sooo they will have to buy the rights from Tolkiens son to do a second movie that's based on anything else (Simarillion/Unfinished Tales etc..) And he wasn't very warm to the idea of filming the trilogy anyways so we'll have to wait and see. I don't think he even chose to watch them.

Too bad for him, he miss 3 great movies that do great honor to his father's work. But it's his right not too see them if he want's too.

I thought that the second movie was supposed to be a bridging film, not based on any other particular book. It is supposed to tell what happens between The Hobbit and The Fellowship.

I was excited when I heard Gullermo was helming and Jackson was producing, and like theauthor of that article, every time Gullermo speaks of the project I get more excited.

Del Toro stated that he will be following Jackson's vision of the "Ring" films. On a second note, even though Del Toro is the director he will be working with everyone that did it last time around for the Trilogy and Jackson still has FULL creative control.

That's what it is. BUT to do this you need other information and side tales that show what the other characters were doing at the time. All that substance will have to come from other sources Tolkien had published in other books.

LOTR were the best movies of all time in my opinion. I can't wait for The Hobbit. Tolkein was so incredibly talented. It's so nice Hollywood finally has the technology to reproduce his works.

This is good news. Considering the amount of days the crew is using for filming, I expect outstanding attention to detail.

This movie should NOT be made. The Hobbit was a children's book. So they'll either keep it similiar to LOTR in feeling which doesn't represent the book, or they'll make it childlike to be faithful to the book but then piss off all the fans of the LOTR movies.

Seriously do you think we're going to see Elves dancing around singing 'tra la la?'

If they want to turn anything into a movie they should have adapted the Children of Hurin novel. That would have been wicked!!!

Have you seen Pan's Labyrinth? The story is very, very similar to a fairy tale, but is an extremely dark film. Del Toro can easily keep the child-like feel of the story (The Hobbit, as you pointed out, is a children tale, after-all), but also introduce some darker and adventurous details without negating the story.
